Leaked 2.2 Froyo thread

Anyway, I'm trying to decide between the leaked 2.2 and the cognition 2.2. Though I've read through most of the posts in this and other Froyo threads, it's still unclear to me
1. Whether my phone will remain rooted if I go with the leaked version
2. Whether I can use a 1-click rooter if I install the leaked 2.2
3. Whether there are any benefits above lag-fixes (which I do not want) with going the Cognition route.

If you use the leaked 2.2 you will not keep your root. You will have to reroot and it's not a one click method.
As of last night there is not a 1-click rooter for the leaked 2.2 for the Captivate that I am aware of.
Going to Cognition 2.2 Beta from 2.1 gives you root basically. It also gives you Bluez bluetooth stack (no idea what this is) the stock battery with percentage (I love this) and that's pretty much all I can think of. It's really easy to do though.

I wouldn't use the OCLF in 2.2 as some people, including me have had issues with it. I had to flash back to 2.1 and then back to Cognition 2.2 Beta to fix it.
You can use Titanium Backup to restore your apps and data but some people have reported problems with this as well.
You cannot use Rom Manager once you're in 2.2 to flash to something else or backup.

Hey guys, I'm new to Captivate and I came upon this thread. Couple relevant questions:
1. What do you mean by a phone being "rooted"
2. Has ATT given any indication on 2.2 official update or would this froyo 2.2 update the best option for a while.

Thanks

1. Root or su (super user) means (if you're coming from Windows environment) is administrative access.

2. AT&T has not given any indication on when Froyo would be officially released. Some rumors say it will happen in mid-October.

I'd advise against the leaked build. There are plenty of bugs/issues already found with it so it's obviously a beta build still undergoing development and optimization. Such builds aren't released to the consumer yet for a reason... it's not like AT&T and Samsung have it all ready to go and are just holding it back in order to annoy everyone.

The video from PingPongBoss, you can clearly see that the GPS has not locked. This can be confirmed by seeing the flashing sat icon up top, so the phone is using Wireless Networks to find his location indoors and not GPS as the video claims. Would love to see someone go outside and show they have Wireless Networks disabled then fire up the GPS to see how it works. From what I'm seeing, seems like the leaked Froyo build does not address the GPS issue.

I want to install Cognition 2.2 on my sister's phone. She has 2.1 (JH7). Do I just remove the lagfix, install rom manager and go from there?

exactly.

1. remove lag fix
2. put the zip for cog 2.2 on the internal sd card
3. use rom manager
4. it will ask you to install clockwork mod
5. it will put you in download mode, select re install packages
6. find the zip
7. it should install, and enjoy!
8. re apply lag fix using the sl4a app built in the rom

In defense of picklesNickles, I also found it a bit tedious to have to scan through a bunch of irrelevant posts to get to what I wanted to know about the leaked Froyo. Can't these kinds of banter to left in pm?

With leaked froyo your phone will not be rooted.

I chose to go with the cognition rom and I would highly recommend it. From what I've read, the stock 2.2 is tedious to root. There are probably some easier ways by now though.

Also, the lag fix with cognition is optional. I ran quadrant before the lag fix and got around 800 (if memory serves). Yesterday I did the OCLF and scored 2100(ish) afterwards. This thing is really fast!

One final nice touch from cognition is the accurate batter meter. It may be small, but I used to get really annoyed when my battery monitor showed 35% and the Samsung battery meter what showing me roughly half full!

"Rooted" means that the user (you) have access to the "root" account. Basicly, it means full control over the phone. It's a double-edged sword, b/c you can both enable functionality that AT&T/Samsung/Google doesn't want you to have, but also you can really screw up your phone.

The official Froyo update is rumored to be in mid-October.

Well, I went into town today (Ukiah, about 10 miles south of me), and my first stop was for lunch at Carl's Jr, so I ran My Tracks from my place to Carl's. As you can see, other than three VERY tiny portions where it had me driving in wine vineyards (this is wine country) next to Hwy 101 it was spot on.

Track 1 - Google Maps

It's still not as good as my Droid X though, I hope the OTA Froyo fixes whatever bugs remain.

Hi, someone said the same thing in a video comment. i responded with a test with my Captivate's wifi turned off. I opened Maps and at first (almost immediately), the GPS got a 900 meter huge circle. After 5-10 seconds of flashing GPS icon, it locked on to 10 meters and stopped flashing.

So I downloaded and followed all the directions and its not working. I cut my phone off, held down the volume buttons. Then I plugged in my captivate, and right when I plugged it in it went straigh to this black a=screen of the android shoveling something and under it it said downloading. Do not turn off target. Is this right?

Yes that's right, the phone is now in Download Mode. Now it can be flashed.

I must be missing something stupid, but I cant seem to find any kind of lag fix app built into Cog. 2.2? Where do you find it?

Thanks

you should see an app called "sl4a" in the app drawer. Open it, and install what is called (i think) ext2. That is what the lag fix is called.

Hmm, I seem to be missing that app, nothing like it or even close to it..
Does anyone know if OCLF will work with Cog. 2.2?

I am going back to 2.1 with lagfix and root. I love the new 2.2 leak, but it is too buggy and slow for me for now. But I can tell if they fix the lag and bugs, 2.2 will be an awesome upgrade!!!

I'm new to Android and I was able to do this. I now have 2.2 and it looks pretty cool.
I backed up all my apps with titanium back up first, and didn't lose any data from my games either.

Only one question, How do I get SWYPE back??

There isn't a lag fix included in the Froyo leak.
If you're using Cognition 2.2 Beta or Beta2 you have one of two Lagfix applications on your phone.
The very early version had sl4a but it was removed because it was causing some problems.
All versions since have OCLF.

Again, if you're not using Cognition, you're not going to find the lagfix installed.

Running the leaked froyo build. My GPS takes about 10-15 seconds to get a lock, OS feels a little snappier, although a very little buggyness is present also. Okay, so how do I go back to 2.1 if I'm not satisfied with 2.2?

Yea, how do you go back to 2.1 if the leaked version isn't working great and/or you want to prepare for the official Samsung/ATT release of froyo?
