LED notification

I just have this phone on Rogers since yesterday. Still discover new things and compare to my previous Motorola Milestone, eh...
My question is: does this phone blink the LED bulb in top left area to show that sms or gmail came? Milestone did it, so I am confused why my phone doesn't do that. Maybe needs special setup? Please help. I installed my favorite Handcent SMS app and just miss the blue color of notification.
Maybe it is damaged?

That backlight notification (in the link peachpuff) posted would be great if it would word with Cognition... Too bad it isn't just a straight forward app we can install.

Does it mean that I'll have to root my phone to get led blink? or, I don't know... I am new here

That means you will NOT be able to have the 4 softkeys at the bottom light up on notification IF you are on a stock ROM. You will have to flash one of the custom roms which peachpuff posted.

The easier, more out of the box solution is to download an app called "NoLED". It's a different take showing notifications.

You can try installing that setiron kernel on top of cognition and see if it'll work, but im not guaranteeing it will. Or you can use the i9000 roms in that thread with the setiron kernel already included.

I use tonepicker to change the notification tone for google voice and neither no led or missed message flasher will notify me I got a text via google voice....any ideas?

Mine does sound.

Let's compare settings (open Voice app > More > Settings...)

Mine are as follows:
Backgound Data - Enabled
Notifications via text mess - UN-checked
Inbox notifications - Checked
Select ringtone (I have something selected)
Vibrate - Checked
Light - UN-checked (useless on Captivate)

What are your settings?

Exactly the same, I have a 2 second dig of a bell as my ringtone via tonepicker. That is when it started going wrong. Is there a way to select a different ringtone than the stock ones without using tonepicker?

I thought we are talking about the light notification here like in normal phones the screen lights up when anything comes like a phone call or sms or any apps notification. Is there any way to do that? like if I recieve an email from gmail or text from GV, my screen lights up while I am on silent (means no sound alerts at all).

Or if I am on earphones plugged in, I hear all alert sounds on my earphone and not outside?

It does not hence the need for a NoLED app since the screen stays off. You only get the notification ringtone alert.

Yep

I tried NoLED but its not what I want. It just flashes red dot. basically I keep my phone on my desk. I keep it on silent (no sound), i want some app which lights up screen everytime i get any notification.

Like the dump phone do. Whatever happened to captivate being a smart phone...darn,
