LED Notification

I'm in the market for a new android phone. I'm stuck between the X and the Incredible, I'm not completely sure.

I've read some things about the LED notification on the Incredible and saying it wasn't very good? I've read the light only stays on for a limited time? I've read colors are limited but that's not a big deal, but if the LED turns of after a couple of minutes it might as well not be on there.

Can anyone confirm or deny this?

I've never timed it, but the LED does turn off after several minutes. What does your other choice , the X, do?

I can only comment on the Incredible, in my experience the notificiations for new mail, missed calls, voicemails, and whatever else you enable it for blink on and off for about 15 minutes or until you acknowledge the issue (check your messages or press Clear the Notification Menu).

This is all fine UNTIL the battery gets down to less than 15%. At this point the Inc notifies you to charge it and the orange LED blinks on and off until you do so. This will continue even when you get a new mail or message. Of course it will still do the Notification Alert sound, but it is still blinking orange. So if you don't have the sound enabled, you would not know you got a new message without turning on the display, because by just using the LED you would think you just need to charge it.

An LED noti shouldnt change ur mind. the X is soo big for most check them out for yourself. I'm not partial to the Incredible because I have it because I will say that the build quality could have been better, but the phone is great, I love it and it will easily last me my year until I renew my two year with another two year.

The LED is useless IMHO. I never use it. Very little customization of it. It's pretty easy to hit the power button to see if anything is in the notification bar rather than looking in the light. Different sounds also let me know if it's email, text, etc.

people saying its turning off after a certain amount of time i have never noticed this, i always receive emails and texts overnight and when i wake up in the morning my led is still blinking. You can't customize the color its green or nothing, orange is reserved for charging and if the battery is low.

mine has never turned off either, I just wait for the green light if its dark room.. otherwise the power button is easy push

The LED notifications for voicemail, text, and gmail only blink for about 15 minutes.

gmail is pushed to your phone which is why it does that.

The HTC mail app and others using POP or IMAP are different. It notifies you when there is unread mail, sound, blinks for 15 minutes. So if you have it set to check once an hour, the LED will blink for 15 min. be off for 45 min. then go on again (since it sees you have unread mail), in a loop until you check it.

If you have it set every 15 minutes (or less), then it will always be blinking until acknowledged.

Some custom ROMs of course could act differently.

My Incredible is getting here tomorrow. It's kind of disappointing to read these comments. I always leave my phone on vibrate and always use the LED to see if it's an email or text or whatever. And using Handcent, I usually set different colors to different contacts. Crap.

I use an app called NoLED. It's meant for phones with no LED indicator, but works great to to keep notifications repeating. You can select the items that you want it to work for (texts, missed calls, Google Talk, calendar, voice mail, and "all other". It will display an icon on the screen for each item that blinks and moves around and it will play a repeating sound until cleared. It's pretty customizable - colors, blink rate, blink speed, sound interval - and works really well for me. The only thing I wish it did was allow you to choose the notification sound and set different sounds for each type of notification. Instead it just plays the same sound for all and it's a built in sound that you can't change, but hey, it works, so I'm happy.

anyone figure out a way to keep the LED blinking indefinately until you acknowledge the message (gmail/text/whatever)?

I am use to this feature being on my motorola droid (original). It allows me to see if I have any reason to look at my phone without needing to click the poewr button and check the notification bar.

My LED is always blinking when I wake up. I can say without a doubt that my LED doesn't turn off after 15 mins of blinking.

The LED is pretty much useless and will just drain your battery. Don't let a tiny thing be your breaking point on deciding on which phone.

So I timed mine after a SMS and it only stayed on for 5 minutes. Is there an app or a setting that could be changed to extend this?

One of the only terrible design aspects of the Incredible is the notification system with the screen off. You will learn to live with it. It's even more annoying when the phone is plugged in or the battery is in the red, because then the near useless LED becomes completely useless.

If my phone is going to have one area where it sucks, however, I'm happy it's the LED notifications.

yeah the inc led sucks. the blackberry (pearl/whatever) led is much much better: bright, obvious, blinks, happy. the inc led: tiny, invisible from various angles, sad, mostly useless except as a charge indicator.

This phone is so ****ed. I woke up this morning to no light at all. phone was fully charged however. I took it off, and turned it off and the red charging light works just fine, but no green light for full charge or notifications.. so I told them I think it's the battery. so they agreed to send me a new one. I went to Verizon to test my theory, took them an hour to tell me they tried it w/o doing anything with new battery and no go, but then they did an upgrade to the software (Bullshit in my opinion) and said after that the new battery showed the green light so it wont work now but when the battery comes it will. I left the PBIMG31.zip on my sdcard cos I unrooted on the way to the store lol, and I had the clockworkmod folder and a folder named "unroot" I wonder what they thought of that. I doubt they can do anything as my phone was s-on and stock recovery.

TOTALLY agree. I mean, with all that physical size, they have a LOT of options in terms of LED placement and size. Quite disappointing. And the lack of flashing (notifications) while charging is a pain too. I installed "alwaysflash" from the market (for rooted phones), and that at least solves that problem. But yeah the LED leaves a lot to be desired.
