Not sure if anyone has posted this, but with all the gripes about the lens being exposed I thought I'd comment. I was cleaning mine today and noticed that the metal ring extends ever so slightly beyond the glass itself, so even if you lay it so the lens is perfectly parallel to something, the ring will touch before the glass. Granted, the clearance isn't much, so a grain of sand or salt could still reach it, but it is recessed.

Correct - that is not the lens but just a clear cover protecting the lens. If it ever got scratched up badly you could just buy a new back cover most likely.

The lens cover is only stuck on by double sided tape. I just recently peeled it off out of curiosity. Therefore, that red piece is very easily replaced. I'm going to call HTC tomorrow to see how much that part costs, in case I want to replace a scratched one in the future.

Allow me to defend myself by saying that most folks who freak out about the placement call that part the lens. Yea, that's it.

It's not a contradiction, one has nothing to do with the other. Calling HTC to see how much the part costs has nothing to do with it being easily replaced.

So basically you can pull it right off if you just put something stickier on the glass? That certainly explains why it's so flush with the ring
But obviously you'd be lucky to get even one replacement lens cover to stick after most of the adhesive came off with the first one... I'm sure they could have figured out something with little Philips head screws... geez

I went to a local VZW store and played with an Incredible. I looked on the back and saw that the lens cover was actually cracked. Pictures didn't seem like it was affected though. Weird.

I totally agree with that. Got a good look at my friends Inc today, and laying on it's back on a flat surface, it is teetering on the lens cover. That just seems... wrong. Maybe the upgraded battery with the larger rear cover to fit it under will add just enough thickness to at least keep the phone from sitting on the lens cover. Or maybe even the right case will do that. Still seems like an odd design choice.

I'm sure they are using a return - they always use the biggest POS they can find for display.
When I went two months ago I was looking at the Eris - the track ball didn't even work =/
Scorpionfalcon - did you (or anyone else) ever try to find what a replacement lens cover would cost or if HTC will even sell a replacement? The plastic lense part got knocked loose of the metal ring on mine and got cracked. The metal ring is still attached but now it is open to the glass part underneath.
Being crazy careful with the phone so that part doesnt get damaged

You guys are the most anal retentive bunch of folks I have I think I have ever seen. Seriously, it might be time to consider therapy 
The lens cover is replaceable, but I'm guessing it will eventually become easier to source the part. Right now, not so much since it's so new (You can practically rebuild an older blackberry with spare parts you can buy online.
I'm sure you could always source something from the aftermarket (perhaps) if you did some measuring:
And for the truly paranoid, you could always buy one of these and stick on your phone :

I have a new phone being sent out to replace the one I have now because of the lense cover.
Half of it was loose (double sided tape makes sense) and the store techs could not fix it so back to HTC it went.
I never dropped it or damaged the phone to cause it to come loose. I only noticed when I was feeling the phone in my pocket (pocket pool) that the lense had a little give to it.

I'd really rather not have to replace the whole phone for this. Worse comes to worse, I would have them send me a replacement, which of course would likely be a refurb, take the lens cover off to swap with mine and send the refurb back to them.

I don't get the "fear" of refurbished phones.
1. If it's a warranty claim (which most of the examples in this thread would be), you can almost always get a new phone from VZW (unless you are being an ass.) I was 6 for 7 with S1's. NOTE: The only reason for me wanting new vs refurb is that I wanted the phone TODAY not tomorrow.
2, If you do face an insurance claim and get a refurb, so what? IT'S A TOUCH SCREEN PHONE with almost ZERO moving parts. Unless someone tells you, you will not be able to tell the difference between new and refurb. There seems to be this idea that they are taking 6 mo. old phones and "freshening" them up and shipping them out. That is NOT the case. Honestly, I would venture failure rates on refurbs are no higher than new phones.
