Let's cure cancer with our phones

Great news! HTC has release a branded BOINC client, which is arbitrarily restricted to HTC devices only! HTC Power to Give.

:-/

Why? Seriously, I don't get it. But hey, you can use it with our team!

It's not using World community grid to compute. But hay. Great to see HTC doing this. Great reviews on there.

It's not?

Really it appears to be just a rebranded BOINC, so it should work with any projects that BOINC can handle. I just love seeing all the posts that are like "this is such a brilliant idea, way to go HTC, why has no one thought of this before??!?!".

Haha, it's people have been doing this since like the 90s. I can't use the app so... But if you can use that asp and join our team that will be great. Tell your friends.

Ok, I've appointed you as the captain since this was originally your idea

Okay, I now see I'm team Captain. So, what I might do is see if I can get our team to participate in some challenges. Now, because we only have 7 members, we won't win any, because we will be going against teams with 1,000 + members, but still, will be fun, and maybe we can get known.

I have a Galaxy Tab 3 and have downloaded the boinc app from the Google Play Store. When I open it it goes to the page to select a project to work on, but does not show me any to choose from. WIFI is on. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the app a couple of times with the same results. Any ideas?

If you're running the newest version, you have to select projects from the left menu, and click the little plus icon in the top right.

Thanks for the reply. I also had to add the project to my project list on the World Community Grid. I think I have it working now, should know something sometime tomorrow.

I don't use the tablet much and thought it would be nice to add it's processor time to something useful. Wish more than just one project from WCG would run on the Tablet.

I am now connected to WCG. This is a message on my Event Log:

"Message from server: This project doesn't support computers of type x86-android-linux-gnu"

The project is FightAIDS@Home which is the only one that is listed as able to run under android.

What tablet are you using? Maybe Boinc Does not support it. x86? Wouldnt that be an Intel Atom processor or something? (I should know, I'm the processor - AMD fanboy)

I have a unrooted Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 model #P5210

The "About Device" doesn't state which processor it has. The Android ver is 4.2.2.

Internet search says it probably is a Intel Atom Z2560.

I installed the Boinc app from Google Play.

Sounds like I may be flogging a dead horse.:D

Is there a way to receive units that arent as big? When the one I'm working on is done, it'll have taken around 18 hours - which is too long for me to do before the deadline (pretty much everything is late :/)

Sorry to inform you. You cannot use your Galaxy Tab 3 to use the Boinc App. This app is only compatible with ARM processors, and you have an Intel Atom x86 processor. Within time, I bet you that they will gain support for this processor, but as of now, you can't use this.

I have the same problem with my Note. I will look further into this.
On my Note 10.1 WU will take up to 200 hours for a project. Yes, 200 hours. That's like 8 days!!!

Wow. And I thought I had it bad.

Turns out it completed just after I made that post, so I only had to put in 13 hours, but I was still 4 hours past the deadline :P

Thanks for the reply. I have two other laptops that are running World Community Grid Cancer studies. One is an HP with Windoz 7 the other is an old Gateway with Ubuntu. Would have been nice to add the Tab to the list.

Boinc did mention that it will be coming. Stay tuned! I'll PM you when I have more news on this.
