the ribbon cable is damaged. You're probably gonna need a completely new LCD for it...

I still want to try to fix it for educational purposes....
I've fixed flat screen lcd computer monitors that were going to be thrown away by replacing dead capacitors before. Samsung wanted $80 for them to fix it, I fixed it for $5.....

Does the laptop have a video out or HDMI? If so you can plug in an external monitor to verify the source of the vertical line.

Try using one of those video signals just to rule out something on the monitor's side.
