Help LG G3 tether issues after Android 5 update

Ed Barnat

Lurker
I have just received the Android Lollipop 5.0.1 upgrade on my LG G3. Since then I seem to have tethering issues. I can enable the mobile hot spot, I can connect devices (computer sees phone – phone sees computer), phone has 4g lte connections and can surf the web but tethered devices cannot access the web (limited/no internet connection).

Have spent time with carrier (Ting – a Tmobile wholesaler) and have not been able to solve the problem.

Anyone else having this issue?

Any ideas on how to solve it?

My guess would be that you have an APN issue. Usually this occurs on International models running on a 'small' carrier's network (not sure if it applies for T-Mo wholesalers running on Ting). But basically -- it goes something like this: when device is sold to the customer by a 'small' carrier, custom APN's are set for the carrier's network. When the device's OS is upgraded, the custom APN's are wiped out and the default APN's ones are restored for that MODEL of phone (regardless of who the carrier is, because USUALLY, the models are carrier specific -- e.g. D850 = AT&T, D851 = T-Mo, D852 = Canada, etc.). So, for example, if you have a D851 (T-Mo), the tethering APN was probably reset to that of T-Mobile instead of Ting.

On my D852 -- I have two APN's -- one for regular internet, and one for tethering. It's probably the tethering one that needs to be fixed for you, as if it was the other one -- you would have known right away (no MMS, data issues, etc.).

To fix, either ask your provider for the correct APN settings or look them up on the internet. Here is an article from the Ting Help Center:

Good luck and let us know if this solved your problem or not.

Thanks for the quick reply. Spent best part of yesterday afternoon on the phone with Ting and did work that link and info. They are pretty sure the settings are right and they are currently at a loss.
