LG G6 SLOW DOWN, HEATING AND BATTERY DRAINING FAST AFTER UPDATE

saideb79

Lurker
After my on air update on February 10, 2018, my G6 has slowed down lagging badly. Even the contacts are taking 10 seconds to comeup. click on call button taking 4-5 seconds to respond. Battery is draining fast not even lasting 2 hours. The phone is heating up as well. Prior to this update the phone was absolute pleasure to use, solid build etc.Request for little help here.

Have you restarted since the update? That might help. When I got the last Security update I restarted and with the same kernel I'm not experiencing what you are. It used to be called a soft-reset but I guess it's now referred to as a Restart.

You've probably got a process stuck on after the update. A restart and/or dump of the system cache should clear that up.

I'm on the same version and have had no problems with it.

Its not helping still the lag is there.

Great to hear that you dont have a problem. Restart is not helping.

Sorry, i don't do it often enough to realize that you don't do that on the G6 with recovery.

Go to settings>general>storage>internal storage and let it calculate all the sizes. This could take a while. Then near the bottom, you see "cached data". Tap on that, choose to delete app caches (it includes system apps) let it finish and then reboot your phone.

Just signed up to tell you you're not alone.

I have these EXACT same problems, and so does another friend who has a G6.

Got the OTA update on Feb 10th too - 1st Jan 2018 security patch / Kernel 3.18.31 - (India) - and the problems started immediately after.

SYMPTOMS
- Battery (used to give 6-7 hr SOT) now lasts for barely 2-3hr SOT. See attached screenshots.
- Phone is constantly hot
- Biggest battery drain is "Android Core Apps" (note that Contacts is part of this)
- Phone is laggy
- Dialer takes 3-5 seconds to call a number after i hit the dial button (eg. on recent calls list)
- Opening Contacts takes ~10 seconds before the list starts to populate
- Scrolling down on the whatsapp list takes 5-8 seconds before contact pictures show up (used to be <1 sec)
- People who call me claim it took me forever to pick up, but I picked up on the first ring
- Developer tools > Show CPU usage > On average its ~15.00-21.00 when the phone is idle. Lowest i've ever seen is 9.00

THINGS I'VE TRIED
- Turning off SYNC (in the notification shade) - this helps battery life a bit, but isn't really a fix
- Clearing cache (Settings > Storage > Internal storage > Cached data) - made no difference
- Restarting (duh) - made no difference
- Uninstalled PayTM (since it was the app with the highest drain - see screenshot) - no difference
- Just (5 minutes back) saw that "Docs" was stuck syncing since the 13th. Went to the docs app and manually refreshed. - Will let you know

YET TO TRY
- Unlinking additional/secondary Google accounts (i read somewhere this might help)
- Hard reset / wiping phone (my friend is trying this at the moment)

I will say that the hotness and battery life have improved in the last 2-3 days. But the phone is still behaving extremely poorly.

Also another friend with a Pixel 2 said he was facing similar issues (with contacts etc) after a recent Google update.
