Root LG Vortex VS660 Custom ROM

Since I’m not subscribed to Verizon service, I didn’t get any update on my device. Not even to Android 2.2.1 version. Lucky for me, bloodxxsyndicate provide nandroid backup of his ROM based on Android 2.2.1 update. That was a good start until then I found Custom Rom "Breakneck" for LG Vortex for further.

Having both ROM (version 2.2.1) as start, I’m working on my own version of 2.2.1 ROM. I want a clean version (without resource modification) of Custom ROM that result would be nearly similar to factory default version except this are already deodexed and optimized. We can all start developing our own customized ROM based on this, and the best part of it, it’s available to everybody, not just Verizon customers. And here I present:


What did you get on this ROM:


  1. Latest Update (20110604)
  2. Clean ROM (Keeping APK’s Dependencies)
  3. ROM Base 2.2.1 (Rooted Already)
  4. Deodexed both for Application and Framework
  5. Optimized and zipaligned all APK’s
  6. JIT Enabled + Increase Heap Memory Size
  7. Remove All Bloatware
  8. Overclockable Kernel
  9. Bundled w/ Google Search & Maps
  10. More space on /data (Google Update is already bundled!)

Update June 4th, 2011: Revert to 2.2.1 Base OS (2.2.2 has Forced Close on USB Tethering)

How to Install:


  1. Your device has to be rooted first! If you’re came from stock 2.2 Android version, then you are lucky, just use z4root to do this.
  2. Because this are ZIP update packages, you must apply custom recovery menu to do ZIP flash update. I would recommend this link and please follow the instruction carefully. The custom recovery image for your Vortex is: recovery-RA-vortex-2.2.1-GNM.img
  3. I’m not writing about steps to apply above mod because it’s already well-documented on creator’s page. I also didn't include any of those requirements in this article on purpose to honor the creator’s request, not to hot-linked the download part in any means.
  4. If you already download the update package on above link, put downloaded ZIP package on the root of your SD Card and apply ZIP flash update from recovery menu.
  5. Enjoy the ROM!

I would like to thanked to all guys that provide me the ingredients to made this ROM, include great tools they’re provide to help me with pack-repack, deodexing and optimizing process.

I couldnt install get an error E:Cant chown/mod /data/app no such file or directory E:Failure at line 9: set_perm_recursive 1000 1000 0771 0644 Data:app installation aborted

Sorry for that, I took the update script from BreakneckMod and there's modification in package which is already fixed in next release.

By the way, please check new update in post! (new version based on 2.2.2).
 
How do I remove Twitter for LG and Facebook for LG. Facebook for Android is a way better Facebook app and I don't use Twitter at all.

Otherwise this is a very nice ROM. Thank you for your work.

It's all in SNS.apk (both Facebook and Twitter), unfortunately, this APK is required by LGSetupWizard.apk. You can still remove it, but you might have Force Close when trying to setup FB and Twitter account on LG Setup Wizard.

One other issue that I have been having is that my 3G connection will randomly stop working. I do not have wifi enabled and it still does not work. Its only been an issue since I started using this ROM. If it is an issue with this ROM do you think this will be fixed in the latest update. A friend of mine said that the PRL (or RPL...I don't remember which one he said) probably needs to be updated. I guess this file relates to the 3G radio in the phone. Do you know anything about that?

I didn't do anything to radio section (RADIO.IMG) which is forbidden to modified by any Custom ROM builder because it could brick your phone. PRL (Preferred Roaming List) is separated from operating system. It's on NVRAM parts and need another tools to modified! I use LG PST to work with this section, including modified any data connection and PRL configuration. However, to edit PRL file it self, I use RL Editor that came as part of QPST Software Suites. Before using this ROM, what ROM did you use and what version? If you came from 2.2 there are lots of difference in system framework and library. But neither of those has to do with my work. I didn't recompile any of those library, only deodex APK in framework and app folder. I use only 1x connection in my country but I have no problem with connection stability.
 
my wife has this phone on verizon but she already has 2.2.2. why not update this rom to reflect that?

also is this rom themed at all?
 
I would love to try this ROM out but it redirects me to lnx.ly, a site that gives me the choice of downloading invasive spyware or downloading invasive spyware.
