go to a contact, go into edit mode, hit your menu key again and select join.

I had that problem too...it changed from Froyo. They've added an extra step. Here ya go.
Pick your contact(make sure it's not a facebook one) >Options>Edit Contact>*Options Again*>Then you'll see Join
