Linux and HTC hero

HTC Sync™ lets you synchronize Outlook and Windows Address Book (Outlook Express), contacts and calendar events on your PC with your phone. It also lets you install third-party Android applications on the phone, and the Mobile Network sharing function as well.

Well I don't think you run Outlook or Windows address book so I'll skip those.

For installing third-party apps, this can be easily done from your SD card but you can also do it through the terminal by using the ADB command in the Android SDK.

For mobile network tethering check out Proxoid or PdaNet

Thank you, I tried to get proxoid from the market, but I get a "cant establish a secure connexion to server..." err msg when login into my google account.

Does this mean https is no enabled ?

My HTC Hero is "European" model A6262 and my provider is Mobistar Belgium (Orange).

What linux distro are you running? I have Kubuntu (Karmic install) and I just run Virtual Box with XP when I want to do anything.

What exactly are you wanting to accomplish?

I use Ubuntu and can do pretty much anything that you can via Windows except for maybe updating the firmware.

For file transfers you can use the standard USB mass storage mode.

For photos you have either Picasa for Linux or a tool like F-Spot or Digikam.

For music you can use something like Amarok, Rhythmbox or Exaile which can all sync to external media players (i.e. your Hero)

For sync, you've got Evolution... although probably even easier is the fact it syncs with Google all the time so you can always use a plugin that pulls it from there.

What exactly are you wanting help with?

I'm using my own breed of Puppy Linux "pupitup" www.pupitup.org and can transfer files via the mass storage via the mount manager.
I will also install karmic on another partition asap for latest innovations (mostly bluetooth support).

My main goal is to use my HTC hero as a modem to surf via the USB cable, or bluetooth under Linux, but I'll settle for M$ XP (SP2) if needed.

My only web connection is via my cell phone (2 GB/month @ 30.00

I am using Ubuntu 9.10. I just connect my phone via USB cable and enable settings->Wireless Controls->Mobile network sharing. That is it! Now I can get internet connection to my Laptop from my phone.

Thanks a lot, it's working, at last HSPA 3G+ instead of Edge.

Posting with Firefox and Ubuntu 9.10

My affinity level for HTC Hero just bounced way higher ! :D

Again, thank you to all who helped.
