Actually, it's the 'basics' that I use most, specifically:
  • contacts
  • calendar / reminders
  • e-mail
  • alarm
  • maps (turn-by-turn)
  • music (well, more podcasts in my case)
  • browser
  • news & weather
  • clock / date
  • games
Funnily enough, my Nokia N80 could do pretty much everything on that list 8 or so years back :D

Maybe not the flashlight - there you go: the reason for having a droid is the flashlight :D

Better astronomy apps than Googlesky or SkEye if they are into it. Sky Safari and Mobile Observatory will do "push to" guiding.
Audubon guides, Sibley Birds, Mushroom ID, Plant ID, Wildflowers, Mammals, Insects, gardening apps. If someone quilts, there are quite a few good apps for yardage and blocks.
Financial apps like Pocket Money if they like budgeting.

Some NP have apps, either free or low cost for guides - I've seen Arches and Canyonlands.

PDF reader. You can scan and make your own travel guide or download free ones. If your camera or other manual is PDF, it's available when you want it.

Plenty of weather apps.

That's just a start.

I'd have to go with photosphere... the ability to almost go back to that moment and look around wherever you like is really cool

I guess my favorite feature is the Kindle app. I like that I always have a 'book' in my pocket so if I have a free moment or two...I can read. All those wasted minutes can now be filled.

Also, having a camera, video camera, calculator, calendar, mp3 player, GPS, maps & navigation, Internet connection for fact checking, e-mail, FTP client, photo album, document storage, voice recorder, Netflix app, barcode scanner, security camera viewer, contacts list and the world at your fingertips...all in your pocket is handy too.
