Locale beta expired

Since locale stopped working for me I started using Timeriffic. works great. Doesn't do all Locale did but it is free and goes by time.
 
Just uninstalled Locale and paid for Settings Profile. SP just does a LOT more out of the box and doesn't cost 10 dollars for the initial and 99 cents for add ons. If you are going to control Wifi, GPS, start applications and such, you may easily get to 15 dollars with Locale. Sorry, but no thanks.

SP is a bit more complicated to use, but once you figure it out you can save a backup in the event you need to reflash your phone - something Locale was greatly missing for us ROM changers.

With SP, can you change your background wallpaper? That is one thing I had Locale doing that I really want back.

Please don't get me wrong, I think the 24hr return policy is awesome, I was just clarifying my earlier statement that if locale had a trial of the current feature set I would possibly buy it once I'd tried it out, that 24hr wasn't long enough for me to make that decision. For a lot of apps, that 24hrs is plenty of time to figure out if you want it or not.

Oh, I totally agree. Locale, well....these programs in general are so in-depth that 24 hours doesn't give enough time to FULLY test them out. But I think its a very good amount of time to determine if its a good fit and if you have confidence that the dev will produce enough improvements over the lifespan of the program.
 
Pretty dick move to disable something that people are depending on. If the GPS part actually worked right, and they didn't try to force the upgrade down our throats, I would have paid for it, but it's not worth it for a program that doesn't work.

The only actions I see that you can take from a rule in settings-profiles is to activate a profile, run an app, or create a notification.

There is also no set wallpaper setting in the profile settings.

So it looks like you can't change your wallpaper from it, unless there's a way to run an application to change the wallpaper.

I'm still trying to figure out how locale becomes so essential for you guys. I guess I never noticed the importance because the Behold II has editable custom sound profiles that let's me switch between Normal, Silent, Vibration, Driving and Outdoor.
 
so has any one found a good replacement of locale? i know you guys were saying timeriffic and SP.. but what i am looking for is GPS/Time and calender based profiles for setting ringer/notification to vibrate. Also, when its on
"normal" (when it can ring) i want to use individual ringtones for people..


ps i just got this phone yesterday.. never got to mess with locale, so i dont really know what it can do..

Settings Profiles can support your conditions (GPS/Time/Calendar based), but it can't set notifications to vibrate. It can only set the ringer to vibrate. I made some feature requests for this on their site.

I think the key word there is 'me' - this sort of app means you can set it to do the switching for you.. Might seem lazy or pointless, but it's a like a lot of things - once you've gotten used to it, you don't want to not have it..
The iPhone not having this app is one of the reasons I am going android. Such a simple thing, but I've had it on Nokias for years and I can't do without!
 
After Locale suddenly expired, letting me in trouble, I've read a post about Setting Profiles and I've decided to switch. The only missing thing is the Locale's plugin-based philosophy that let user extent features by (paid) addons, but it seems that Setting Profiles includes everything I need in a bundle.
 
I bet apps wouldn't be that hard to make if you are familiar with Java been as though in some states its checking the time and changing the settings or also checking the gps and changing the settings and so on.

Locale was amazing because of its calendar tie in and the ability to set profiles based on location and time, for me. I work in a corporate office environment and when I am at my desk, I like my phone to have a certain volume and notification setting. When I go into a meeting that I had selected in Locale, such as a regularly occurring event, it would automatically switch sounds an notifications off and I wouldn't even have to think about it. When the meeting was done, it would go back to my work settings.

If the battery was low, it would shut off all the wifi and such, plus send me a text/tweet to notify me that my phone needed to be plugged in. There were tons of pay and free plugins that made the program so powerful and indespensible to many people. The fact that it was automated and truly makes it a 'smart' phone is what was truly amazing about the program.
 
I too give +1 to "Setting Profiles" and Timeriffic depending on your needs. I'm using them both at the moment. I need to be able to turn off notification vibrate at night, and with Setting Profiles currently can't toggle vibrate for notifications, so I'm still using Timerrific for my night mode. I also don't like that it doesn't have an option to leave a specific setting unchanged when a profile is triggered. *Edit* It can do this, thats what the stars are for.

For just time based switching, Timerrific is great imo. It would be my only program, except that I want to be able to trigger on conditions such as charging, docked, low battery, etc too.

ToggleSettings is also an alternative, but it is too bloated for my tastes. I don't like that it wants to auto kill tasks for me, and I cant disable this feature. To me that is beyond the scope of a profile changing app. The reviews also seem to indicate it doesn't handle a charging condition properly at this time.

I don't have a problem with the Locale developer charging for his app, but I do think it is a bit unfair to give no warning and no indication of what is happening. People got the normal update notification and did so, and at that point couldn't go back to using the beta until it expired. Others, the beta just expired with no warning and the app ceased to work, with no indication unless you open the app. Kind of pointless for an app that is made to be set it and forget it. That is poor programming imo.

I can't see myself ever going back to Locale for two reasons:

  1. It secretly (as in "without notice") send data to a 3rd party (flurry.com) including, but not necessarily limited to, the IMEI number of your phone.

  2. The beta version included an undisclosed time bomb, where it stopped working with no notice to the user unless the user opened the app itself
 
I've been using Tasker 0.8b now for a few days and must say that it is pretty robust in what it can do. It really takes some time to sit down with it in order to figure it out completely, time I have not yet given it so I will reserve judgement until later this week. One thing that is still glaring me in the face about the non-Locale apps is the calendar integration, or lack thereof. It would seem, again after only a little bit of use, that you have to set all the alerts and such separately.

Locale still has the best calendar integration out there, IMO. So if anyone has something much like that that they have seen, please let me know.
 
Tasker looks insane, and much more configurable like what I wanted Locale to do. Now I want to do stuff like:

"If it's late and the phone isn't moving, I'm probably asleep. Turn off the ringer and vibrator."

"Around 9 AM, turn on GPS and check if I'm on my way to work. If so, turn off the ringer and Wi-Fi, then turn GPS back off."

Also, could configure an active shake gesture to rotate the screen orientation, which would work a lot better than the auto-rotation based only on tilt.
