Locale beta expired

@takuya: I will be doing calendar integration in the near future, go and vote on the poll on how it should be implemented, if you havn't already!

Edit: I pulled it because I've accumulated enough issues, bugs and feature requests so that further testing at this point is not useful and probably just brings up the same things again.

Pent, I'm using your .8b for Android 1.5 which I downloaded from the link in this forum and I have not ran into any bugs so far for what I'm using it for. Even though it is not as user friendly as you may want it yet, your WIKI page was very very helpful for me. I was able to use your app to do what is discussed in this forum, http://androidforums.com/htc-droid-eris/42171-ships-bell-clock-needed.html.

I do have a one suggestion for easier user integration. The only big configuration problem I had was the use of 'variables' on the task. So, couldn't the variable after the 'If' statement just be a selection box so that users like me can select the setting they want instead of typing in a cryptic variable like %VOLM? I'm thinking a drop down box which lists it as 'Media Volume' and in the background the app simply uses the %VOLM variable it needs.

I saw that, love the bell sounds :D

Definitely, thanks, sometimes I miss totally obvious things.

Pent,

I just noticed that your Tasker app has a similar 'time bomb' of April 2010. You may want to make that disclaimer a lot more prevalent in your BETA since you don't want to experience the same thing that has happen in this Locale thread with the Tasker app.

It should give a 10 day or so warning.

However, I will make it clearer at the download stage that Tasker will be a paid app, thanks.

somebody just buy the app and post up the .apk file lol..

if you guys are really pissed, thats how you'd stick it to the devs.

But why does that require a time bomb?

Can only speak for myself:

a) These are beta versions for *testing* to help me improve things. If you're not upgrading to the latest version after 3 months, then you're obviously not usefully testing anymore.

b) In a sane software market, if you want to release a paid-for app, you wouldn't want to be releasing non-limited beta-versions that are 'good enough' so that there's no need for people to buy the paid versions.

Of course, in Android Market it's pretty moot, because anyone can distribute the paid-for version and so the developer need only be paid
for a single copy, but old habits die hard, I guess.

c) I don't like the idea of people using an old embarassing buggy version when there is a better version available.

Why do I get the feeling this may turn into a lengthy discussion ?

Not an effective threat. Within an hour of release it will already have been posted up for free by someone else.

Understood. I am actively seeking a replacement for Locale and would like to participate in the beta testing when available again.

Pent,

If you pulled it because you were getting too much feedback, if we promise not to provide feedback, can we get a copy of your app to play with to see how it works and if we like it? :)

Is anyone really using Locale anymore after the paid version was so much worse than the beta? Setting Profiles is app to use for this now. Locale is yesterday's news.

LocationBot is only 0.99 British pounds for the full version and can set WiFi, volume, auto-sync, vibrate etc according to your location + time. The free version LocationBotLite allows 2 profiles to be configured e.g. HOME and WORK. Location is taken from GPS (if available), or network (fallback when GPS unavailable).

It's an ongoing project (at time of writing) so I'd be grateful for any feedback. I will not resort to any of the unscrupulous activites described on this forum, so if you prefer to use the Lite version I guarantee this will always be available and an update to the paid-for version will never be forced upon anyone.
