Help locations not working

I seem unable to get the Locations app to work properly. Google maps is fine and will bring up current location map. But the Locations one always seems to bring message "current location temporarily unavailable". The GPS symbol flashes and both wi-fi and data connection are enabled.
It would also seem that other apps such as Weather use this information to update their location - so these do not always bring up correct data either.
I've tried clearing cache and re-starting but this does not seem to make much difference. Any ideas please?

I sorted this problem by clearing the data out of the HTC Sense Input app (you'll lose your personal dictionary by doing so, so you may wish to back it up to the SD card)
 
on reflection, the locations may be working OK. I do get a large map of the UK with the green dot in approx the correct place. What may be missing is the map data - is this a paid for extra in this app?
