I recently visited relatives in NYC just before I left one of them sent me a text and I can't remember how but I was able to see his location. ..what app would that be?

In what way could you see the location? Was it an SMS or MMS?

So that you could follow and track them?

Glympse.

And I think Waze can do it now also.

Easily solved ... text your relative and ask what app was used.

Glympse is awesome. You send a link from your phone to any contact via text or email and they get a secured link only they can see (and anyone they forward it to). You set how long they can track you before you send it. Cross platform. Any browser can view your location. Not a lot to complain about here.
