Lock Screen won't accept password can we get behind it?

Hi
We have a similar problem in that the initial screenlock seems to have got the password confused/corrupted, now surely this is not the same password as the Google Account, but is set from the Handset?

I am looking for either A) way round this?
or B) getting the SMS messages of the phone and then factory reset ?

The Handset is a Wildfire, (unlocked but NOT rooted) photos, emails, contacts are backed/up but NOT sms!!
(my daughter - I set the rest to be bullet-proof-ish, but it never occurred to me that anyone would store/value Texts?)

Forgot to mention phone does have Cerberus installed, but can't see that allows me to unlock it (ie the screenlock app not the Cerberus lock/unlock option)

How wrong can you be...
The Cerberus command "Cerberus password unlock" simply removes the screenlock, after four days of touring Forums and technical support contacts, its as simple as sending that command from my PC

30 people read this, did they also not know about Cerberus (or not enough about it?).

It's a brilliant bit of software more than worth the
