lock/unlock sound effects

I don't know if this setting was here before 2.2 or not but I just found it. The opition for the phone to make sound when locking or unlocking it. I now hear a simple clicking sound.
Does anyone now how the change these 2 sounds, I have a few mechanical sounds that would compliment the Droid theme. The transformers sound effect would be the shit when unlocking...

You can only enable or disable the sound, there's no option to select custom ones.

However, the two .ogg files for lock and unlock and located in /system/media/audio/ui. I would imagine replacing them with your own would change the sounds. This of course requires root.

If you have two specific .ogg files I can use, I'll try it on mine.
 
The problem with it being that simple is that, if you fark up a step, you've got a good chance being SOL b/c 1) you're a n00b, and 2) you don't have the experience of all the other folks that have done this numerous times and are able to help figure out where you are going wrong and whatnot.

After I posted my soliloquy, more than a few stepped forward and realized that, yes, three is more to it than just following a guide.

Also, FWIW, in this case (and this is by far the first time I am ever recommending this) a simple easy root app might be the best choice since he OP has a very specific goal in mind that required elevated privileges and nothing else.

(I know a lot of other vets on here right now are looking at me like I am some sort of alien lol....)

I am overall happy with stock, but as you said the easy root maybe my best choice just for the small tinkerings.

I just used terminal emulator. Below are the commands to replace Unlock.ogg. The Lock.ogg file is also there if you want that replaced too.

mount -o remount, rw /dev/block/mtdblock4 /system
mv /system/media/audio/ui/Unlock.ogg /system/media/audio/ui/Unlock.ogg.bak
cp /sdcard/path/to/your/ogg/file /system/media/audio/ui/Unlock.ogg
Then go to Android Settings, Sounds, enabled lock/unlock audio.

This will b my first experiance using terminal emulator. That code u supplied, is hat one command entirely or is each line entered on its own.

And how would I convert a file, such as the transformer sound: -) , to ogg? Couldn I use mp3?
 
it would be nice to find a place with a selection of cool sounds.. the stock lock and unlock sucks.

rather than using terminal emulator, why cant the OP just use something like Astro - or another file manager - to copy the file off his SD card and drop it into /ui/ and kill off the old sound?
 
I use FormatFactory 2.30 on the pc to change my media files to whatever format I need.

Root Explorer from the market it allows you to change permissions drag/drop access.

You'll need Root Explorer. Don't you folks want to play on terminal? Its far more interesting ;)

went here and got a cool fast but clear lightsaber sound, used Audacity on Mac to convert to ogg, renamed to Unlock.ogg. used Root Explorer to place it and... it does not play. tried 2 other wav to ogg converters and they would claim to convert, but in fact, they do not play when put on the Droid.. huh?? any converter recommendations that are free?
 
Mine didnt at first. I noticed I did not capitalize the first letter of the file.
Pretty much installed as you did but with root explorer.
Did you rename the originals (I did Unlock1.ogg & Lock1.ogg) then moved new files in.

-I did use root explorer
-I did not rename the original, I just "archived" it which zips it and stores it away
-when I tried to play it with the on board music player, or even root explorer, my ogg file does not play but all other ogg files on board do play

so clearly, my ogg file creation is peculiar in some way
 
SUCCESS.. it all came down to making the ogg files

on a Mac I used mp3 files and opened them with an app called Switch, in Switch I then exported as ogg files. I then placed them on my SD card via USB. I then used Root Explorer to mount as r/w and "zipped" the 2 old files Unlock.ogg and Lock.ogg (so I could go back), I then used root explorer to "move" my 2 new files from my SD card to /system/media/audio/ui and viola.. they played.

so, maybe the first time around was an issue of trying to convert wav files to ogg made them junk but making mo3 to ogg worked.

it funny how a simple sound exchange can cause such nuisance yet leaving you reward with such a "yeah does your phone do this" feeling..

On a side note, I have reverted back to the click on unlock, seems the longer file I was using lagged the opening slightly.
