Locked devices.....

We've always had a number of these, increasing as FRP became more widespread, so I'm not sure whether there has been a spike in them. Without collecting statistics (and even in lockdown I don't have that much time on my hands) it's hard to say whether it's significant: random events will sometimes produce clusters even when there is no underlying change in the probability, so it's a matter of what criteria you use to judge a significant change.

I'm much more struck by the huge increase in "welp, I've found a heart on my partner's screenshot!" posts. Actually my impression is that there haven't been quite so many of those the last few weeks, but a couple of years ago we had none of them, then suddenly the world was flooded with people who are deeply insecure about their relationships and turn to a bunch of strangers on the internet because they daren't ask the other person or won't believe their answer. It was as if it suddenly became a fashion, except that since the usual answer is "no idea, there are about a hundred thousand apps with icons a bit like that" it's hard to see how it could have been inspired by other people asking it...

These grate on my nerves for some reason.

Maybe it's because the vast majority are not on the person's own device, but rather, as you said, on their partner's--but they rarely come right out and say that. I think their coy, 'what could this possibly be?!', as if an alien alert appeared on their device, just rubs me the wrong way.

When I'm feeling lazy, I just refer them to this explanation I wrote, and leave it at that.

I always have to bite my tongue and resist the urge to type "Just ask them. If you can't do that then that, not an icon in a screenshot, is the reason that your relationship is in trouble". :p
You may not have noticed, but I've come pretty close to that lately. :o

As a result, I've chosen not to even view those threads. Sometimes, a brief, self-imposed, cooling off period does me a world of good! :D

I've tended to only reply to them if I actually recognise what it is, namely Samsung Members or Google Fit.

I like those threads because I get to go full on sleuth mode to try and find the app. Then I can't find it and I hate the thread.
Ha ha, I know the feeling! It can be fun playing sleuth and can--very occasionally--result in success.

Check out this mystery I solved regarding a heart icon. It was fun! :D Read the beginning of the thread to see how it unfolded.
