Help Locked out of my new S3.

I just recieved my first smart phone, the galaxy S3. I played around with the settings and put a PIN password on it because i have an old itouch and i like the speed of punching in 4 numbers. This worked 3 times until I plugged it into my PC to put some music on it. now it will not recognize my password. I DID NOT put in my google account.
I would like to know if i can recover it without resetting. I don't want to re-enter my contacts and I just customized it to the way i like it. But if i have to, then i guess i have to.
Personally, I am already disappointed when i found out that something as important as a password failure isn't a rare issue.

I think if you get it wrong several times it will allow you to reset it by putting in your email and password

To be fair to the phone/android, youre really supposed to log into an android device when you activate it. i think factory reset removes the pin lock (as well as any user data on the device)

I can understand this but a faulty password system shouldn't be covered up by an online password system.
It also seems like some of my settings reset. I changed the sleep mode from 30 seconds to a minute but now its back to 30 seconds.

You set up a 4-digit PIN, which worked correctly until you connected via USB to transfer music, after which the PIN was no longer recognised?

I've never experienced this in the four Android handsets I've owned, so it's definitely not a widespread issue. The use of Google account credentials is simply a secure fallback in case the PIN or password is forgotten, as the account password should only be known to the owner.
