My son had a password on his Hero. Something happened, now he can't get into his phone. I read about a hard reset but I assume he'll lose all his contacts etc...any suggestions....I read where someone said to backup your data before restoring factory reset but how's he to back it up if he cant get in...

If it was a password, or PIN, rather than a lock pattern then it sounds as if he's locked out of his SIM card. Contacting his carrier's customer service dept (often there is a dedicated phone number for PUK requests) will sort this out quickly.
