Lockscreen on the Fly

So you are walking into a meeting but need to check if you received an important email that is pertinent before walking in. You did not receive so you put the phone in your pocket before the lockscreen kicks in. After the meeting you noticed that while in your pocket you were able to move widgets, change scenes, delete scenes, etc. Now you have to figure out how things were.

Does anyone know how to lock the screen right away without waiting for it kick in? I did a search and no cigar.

Well on the G1 it is the HangUp/PowerButton

Should be similar

I just tried and it just shuts off the phone.

No, wait. It looks like it puts it into sleep mode(screens turns off)and locks the screen.

Press the power/hang up button (just press, not hold).
Then to get back on you just have to press any of the top 4 buttons and then get past the lock screen with the scroll down/preset motion.
