Is there any way we can install an app or whatnot that would allow us to search by long pressing the home button? I've heard it mentioned before.

Right now I'm using Wave Launcher and Vlingo. That's the best there is for now afaik.
However, a dev over at xda is actively working on remapping our buttons AND eliminating the giant three dot menu bar. At present he's having an issue recompiling the code, but hopes he may have it fixed by the end of the weekend.
Also interested in this. Right now if I long press the Search Button on my EVO it will bring up the QuickDesk app which has some useful apps I sometimes want to launch without backing out of my current app. Would love if it was possible to do something similar on the EVO LTE... maybe by long pressing the Back button instead.

If you root your phone, there are custom ROMs being made that should support long press options (and remove the menu bar). But as of now, SwipePad or Wave Launcher are probably the two best alternatives.
