Looking for a good and reliable anti virus app

Guess what: you may want to try... Antivirus!
Lookout is also good anti-virus software. And it adds phone tracking (GPS) in case of loss or theft, and a remote 'scream' command (if you still can't find it at its GPS location). The paid version adds remote shut down and wipe.
Both apps are free and available from the Market.
I have both installed (double anti-virus scanning). They get updated often, primarily for new virus definitions of course.
I suggest you password-protect the Lookout app with an applocker to prevent uninstalling by a thief. Also free and available in the Market.
Also convenient to hide your porn collection...
Of course you can also track your phone by running Google's Latitude app, stock on your phone, and having it tracked by/on someone else's phone (like your wife's? Or would that be a recipe for divorce...
?)Or you could run the free WAZE app on your phone. If you don't disable it (it's on by default) other WAZErs see your phone's avatar on a map, with coordinates. So in case of loss or theft all you have to do is get hold of another phone and start up WAZE on it and bingo: you can see where your phone is on a dynamic map.
WAZE is a crowd-sourced LIVE satnav/routing/traffic information system. Ideal for people who drive a lot. Know at the same time as the cops do that a traffic jam is building because of an accident some distance ahead on your route. And you can decide, or not of course, to detour early and effectively.
OR you could of course run the FourSquare app. Same m.o.: look up on someone else's phone where yours is.
Etc., etc., etc.

Lets not start arguing about this please (I'm not saying folk will, but Antivirus threads are as contentious a subject as task killers and I've seen them head in similar directions before). Regardless of whether you think AV is worth it or not, it is up to individual users what they install on their phone.
Zafonic, being careful with what you install has a lot to do with it, this post has some good advice on what to look out for. Lookout has been mentioned a couple of times, I'll second that if only for the fact that it's phone tracking capabilities are pretty good. Whether or not it provides any real protection is another story altogether though.

I'm sure teaching the OP why you feel it's unneeded would be helpful.

As noted, different people have very different feelings on the topic. Each have their own reasons and fortunately, neither side of the coin is "wrong."
All we can do is lay out all the evidence and let everyone pick for themselves. Let's keep this in mind in future responses.

Actually, I would prefer that those recommending the "antivirus" applications show some data that demonstrates that these apps are actually able to detect and remove viruses from a phone. The lack of said data and the fact that viruses, while they do exist, are very rare on Android devices unless you are downloading every pirated application you can find. Until I see any proof that these work, I refuse to have a data hog running on my phone.Some people prefer it or don't know why they do or don't need it. Having the door locked won't matter much if you invite (aka install) malicious people into your house. Until someone can prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that these programs are able to remove viruses, they are nothing more than a useless barrier that makes the phone's owner feel a little safer.

I really wanted to love Lookout, but ended up settling for Plan B which doesn't reside on the phone. I personally don't hold the anti-virus apps in very high regard, but I'll take a free phone locator any day.
