The paid versions of Nova/Apex are considered to be the most popular and full featured. The free Nova version still has alot of customization option but lacks folder organization and unread count notifications.
For free the free ones, look into Buzz, Hola, Apus, Action.

I'm looking for a alternative launcher
I have two: Flyme from Meizu (I have Meizu phone) and another 3rd party - APUS Launcher. I like both of them, but Meizu is difficult to use sometimes because of chinese characters, but APUS I like a lot. More than 200 themes and it's fast.

In the past I liked L Launcher:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.l.launcher

Then I moved to Nova. Now I'm using the Google Now Launcher and I'm loving it. No more flipping through screens to find my apps. Just have to scroll through the alphabet. It also does "Ok Google" from the homescreen.

I have had terrible experiences with Hola Launcher because I caught it ignoring my settings (I had data turned off and it was accessing the web regardless). I don't trust Apus Launcher because the look and feel is too close to Hola Launcher for comfort for me. Similarly, I've had a not so good experience with ZenUI Launcher. It seems to have some hidden Cheetah Mobile component to it that I didn't ask for and didn't want. Also, ZenUI uses more battery than the other launchers I mentioned above but it still is not a battery hog. ZenUI does have lots of themes though.

Finally, another launcher which I have no opinion about because I didn't use it long enough is Buzz Launcher. It also has lots of themes and stuff.

nova Prime and never looked back...

oodles of features, and makes backups so you can restore you Wallpapers/Homescreens/folders

I downloaded this launcher and all I can say is, man, that is one complicated launcher. It needs to come with a manual. It's going to occupy me for days. ;)
really I found it quite easy :) there are a ton of things you can do with Total but yes learning it may take a few days I had its predecessor SSLauncher for a few years before this one came out.

I'm enjoying this launcher (Total Launcher). It's very easy on the battery using less than 1% of the total app battery usage where other launchers use 2-5%, not a giant amount but every little bit helps.

The problem I'm having is getting "Ok Google" working. Have you been able to get it working? According to my settings, it should be working but it's not.

I am an ardent Nova Launcher Prime user.

Launcher's don't use up battery, someone has a false conclusion on that one.
and I am a 'me too' Nova Prime user. My Note 4 uses about 1-2 percent battery overnight if not awakened while I sleep... at such a small differential, you can't really say for sure....

was it 1% or 2% ?? flippy/floppy with the counter..... now if you let it sleep for 24 hours, then you can extrapolate the use per/hour.

Launchers are apps and they do use battery depending on how much they tax the CPU. Ideally, they should use very little and indeed most do.

Incidentally, given my pattern of use, apps use more battery than the screen.
