Root Looking to root

I have an Atrix 4g and i was looking for rooting my first time. Of course just like any other first timers i am terrified to like brick my phone. I saw the ICS rom for the Atrix and it looks really cool and stable.
But i have also heard of roms that cant use the fingerprint scanner, and i use that a lot and it is very helpful.

Oh and I was wondering if you can recieve OTA when you are rooted and if not is there a way to unroot so you can recieve the update. Because i really want the ICS update motorola is releasing 3rd quarter.

I was also looking into rooting CyanogenMod or something like that.

I don't have an Atrix, so I don't know about the fingerprint scanner. Hopefully someone can come along and answer that for you.

Rooting isn't the same as loading a custom ROM.

It's possible to root and still receive OTA updates, the update will unroot you automatically. To do this, you would root but not install a custom recovery image.

In order to load custom ROMs, you will need that custom recovery image, but there's always a way back to stock if you really want the OTA. In my experience, the ROM developers are likely to update at least as fast (usually faster) than the OTA, so I never had any reason to return to stock for an update; I'd just download and flash the newest version of the ROM.

CyanogenMod is a ROM, and it's a good one. You don't root it though, you just flash the ROM, it comes pre-rooted.

I highly recommend working your way through the All Things Root Sticky for your phone, located here. It should help clarify some of the terminology as well as explaining step by step how to follow each process.

Folks on the forums here are really friendly and helpful. Always ask when you're unsure - someone will come along and help. Cheers!

Like was mentioned above, rooting will not disallow the ota's and rooting alone will not let you flash custom roms, you would need to unlock the bootloader.

I do have the AT&t version so it has an unlocked bootloader. Its just i hear that if you root or flash and recieve the OTA update it bricks your phone.
