What is this masssive file , taking up 228 mb . Can i delete ?

It's created during formatting the sd card and is written to when you reboot your device if your files are hosed, as may happen when you disconnect from your PC without ejecting first. It may (or may not) be useful in file recovery.
You can erase what's in there, but it's going to return, and vary in size over time.

Erased it and rebooted , its gone . Forever hopefully .
If the system finds garbled bits on any reboot, it'll return. It's a normal part of the system, by design.

Thanks , i think it was there since the other day i tried to doenload cm4 , i had to leave so wifi was going to be disconnected . So i tried to stop the doenload in google chrome . It wouldnt let me stop it . Even after i force closed cleared data Uninstalled . Damn buggy chrome , i proceded to reboot , maybe thats where it came from ?
The only reason i thought it might be that is since rhino889a posted that . Correct us if we are wrong good sir as i know you might have encountered this question plenty of times before .

It's possible that it could have come that way, sure. Please also check for partial downloads on your sd card, good idea to delete any of those you find.
As you know on your PC, your hard disk can get dirty over time with things that chkdsk can clear up. If it's a really bad situation, your PC may ask if you want to run that when it reboots sometimes.
Android (Linux) runs a similar process at bootup. Rather than ask you questions like chkdsk, it just handles cleanup silently and it sweeps the dust into LOST.DIR, so to speak.

I would assume that was what it was just by the size of the file.
Over 200 meg.
When this happened to me the file was like 300
What does android have to dump thats that large?
I actually opened the file up and watched it. It was the borked video conversion file.
These things are nice to know about

Sdmaid
It has an option to clean out the system.
There was over 30 megs of stuff that to me was useless
Some are logs that android retains for debugging.
I was amazed at the collection of stuff i had acumalated.
Since my phone was running fine and wasnt submitting logs to developers i removed it all
In the course of a day or so it acumalated another 6 megs.

My LOST.DIR is at 160 kB, and I haven't touched it in 9 months. Everybody's mileage will vary. Always a good idea to watch for wasted space.

Yeah i wasnt trying to imply that everbody has a million gigs in there lostdir.
But i may not have been the only one that had absolutly zero clue about that function and why it seemed like i was missing a little space.
I only know about it from examining every file my phone has.
But i can 100 percent guarantee
Someone will read this and investigate and find a huge chunk of storage ocupied by a file that may never be used or has any,value

it's basically the Recycle bin for Android...
I agree, this is a good subject.
Another tip - lots of folks make full backups of their sd cards, no need to save the LOST.DIR backups.
