Hi everyone. i'm completely new to rooting. i searched alot in google i saw alot of information, abbreviations and wierd terms and i came out of nothing but a headache. can someone please take me to the right page in this forum where to start from ? and what is the latest android version should i root to ?

My GS2 specs :
Model : GT-I9100
Android version : 2.3.5
Baseband version : I9100XXKI4
Kernal version : 2.6.35.7-I9100JPKJ2-CL655700root@DELL143 #2
Build number :GINGERBREAD.JPKJ2

It appears you have a Samsung Galaxy SII unlocked version, which is not tied to any particular provider. I'll move this to the appropriate section in hope that you will find the information you seek. Good luck!

Which carrier are you one? There a different forum for the S2 depending on the carrier.
 
Likely this is the place for you then. Check out the stickys and lean towards threads on Chainfires rooting methods to begin.

I would use this method of rooting
[25.01.2012][CF-Root 5.2] K/EFGHIJKL*, KP1/2/4/8/A, LA2, LP1/2/6 -su+bb+CWM4/5 - xda-developers

You will need to use the cfroot kernel which matches your current one. So go for kj2 in post #7.

I rooted it with KI4 v4.4, isn't this the correct one ? cos last 3 digits of my baseband version is i9100XX(KI4)
CF-Root-SGS2_XX_XEO_KI4-v4.4-CWM4.zip << i dl this one
now after rooting my kernal version looks like this
2.6.35.7-I9100XXKI4-CL61111039 se.infra@sep-62 #2

What matters most (KG1) in this case, is in bold. Try to find the matching file under downloads:

so you are using the number from kernel version, not baseband. So i believe it could be the wrong one, but I am also new, so i could be mistaken, my apologies if i am.

My kernal and Baseband have the same numbers.

baseband : I9100XXKI4
Kernal : 2.6.35.7-I9100XXKI4-CL611039
BUILD NUMBER : GINGERBREAD.JPKJ2

look closely at what you quoted on the 4th line :

line : 2.6.35.7-I9100XXKG1-CL349526

XX< also comes in baseband and also in kernal, the number after these two XX's is (KI4) in my case and (KG1) in what you have quoted
But GINIGERBREAD.JPKJ2< this is my build number and there are no XX's here. so this is not the correct one. i hope i'm not wrong either cos i don't wana brick my phone :mad:
 
in your original post your kernel and baseband had different numbers, i have quoted and bolded the numbers. I believe the one you look at is the one in the kernel version.

Baseband version : I9100XX"KI4"
Kernal version : 2.6.35.7-I9100JP"KJ2"-CL655700root@DELL143 #2

because you patched with a KI4, your kernel now says

dude i think you're right, i never noticed that it also changed the KJ2 to KI4,cos i thought it only changed

thanks for explaning and i hope someone can confirm what you said just to be 100% sure, and how to reroot again ? with Odin ? doesn't the old root need to be removed first? thanks again deadbegenning for your effort =)
 
Yeah it's best to keep your build number and kernel version the same. It doesn't matter about baseband though, this can match or not.

So I would recommended flashing the KJ2 kernel. You don't have to do anything differently than last time. Just flash the new kernel over the top of the old cfroot one.

Ty Shotgun, i was about to flash my ROM to stock firmware and then root again if i wasn't patient to wait for your answer. i did exactly as you said, flashed the kernal with KJ2 with v5.0 on post 7. but in chainfire's post the version 5 includes

CF-Root v5.0 and newer
- "Insecure" mode
- Superuser v3
- Busybox v1.19.2
- Integrated CWM v5
- CWM Manager v3

I only see CWM & superuser icon, Busybox v1.19.2 icon is not showing, any ideas pls ?

on post 2, Checkrom revo HD v4. how do I know if it's compatible with my device ?
cos it says it's based on : XWKK5 Firmware from Samsung, does it have to be XXKI4 to meet my sgs2 ? i mean on what bases should i choose the ROM ? so far, what i know it removes the stock firmware and flashes back the new one. so the numbers doesn't matter, right ?
and how do i know what android version it is 2.3.5 or later ? does it support Arabic writing ? English UI is ok for me. thank you for your valuable time
 
It will be compatible with your phone. It doesn't matter that your old firmware is ki4 as this will be replaced with the rom (just like updating any official firmware). It is a 2.3.6 rom and it might support arabic but I'm not too sure, there are a few languages in the setting which I have no idea what they are.
 
Have a look at Wanamlite's ROM on XDA developers, I think his will support Arabic as he is from that part of the world. I use his ICS ROM.

Many ppl are praising checkrom as the best so far, so i'll stick to it while keeping Wanamlite's in my fav i'll give it a try someday. Cos I found a great solution for the lang support. After successfuly flashing checkrom (thanks to shotgun and others who helped) i went to KitchenPro app>Mods>Arabic RTL Full Support Installed it and it worked like a charm! there are modem and kernal TAB in kitchenpro app. is it worth to flash the kernal to dark knight v2.5.2 or siyah kernel v2.6.2 without any problems ?and if I change the modem to XXKE7 the latest one. will it make any difference or shall i stick to my old KI4 ? can you give me any tips or hints on this pls ? ty very much =)
 
I would recommended siyah. Although I would flash it from here as the kernels in the kitchen are old

Neak kernel is also good.

You just have to try the modems as one which works for some won't work for others. So if the new one isn't an improvement you can easily go back to your old one. The modems there are also old but there's a couple of threads containing the newer ones in the forum.

Ty shotgun for your advice, i successfuly flashed siyah kernel 2.6.11, you replied in other post regarding Voltage settings, if i do not tweak the volt settings, is it already tweaked inside the kernel by default ?, i suppose if that is the case, then gokhanmoral must have put it in it's best settings.
i can't tell if the battery is running good or not, though it drained 3% in 1 hour but i'll wait to calibrate my battery as recommanded by gokhanmoral and check to see the results.

I think he mentioned (smartass v2 governer) in his kernel i don't know if it's bieng used in the kernel by default that's why I asked. If it's by default, then there's no need to tweak other governers when this one is by default and also recommanded by him.

so how do I tweak this governer with your help only if you think it may give good outcome? (Using either SetCpu or Voltage Control App i have both) can you please explain how to set that ?

on VoltageControl main window. it says :

CPU Governor : ondemand

Now that i want Smartass govern to be used. Do i have to change CPU Governer to (SmartassV2) Whereas it's already set by default in siyah kernel as far as i know and leave I/O scheduler to bfq ?

After sliding to the next window (Voltage window) there are many voltages, I change the values to those given in the link ?

Once i find it satisfying i save it to "startup boot".

Beside that i saw from comments, they say it's beta3 kernal is it beta ? and just incase i want to restore my previous kernal can i do it using CWM knowing that i already have backups ?

Gokhanmorals settings will work fine just out of the box and should give you good battery and performance. Although it should be possible to squeeze a bit more battery out by undervolting. I think gokhanmoral doesn't go to crazy on the undervolting as some gs2,s cpu's can't go down as fast as others so he had tried to keep stock somewhere which erroll work for everyone.

To use smartass you will need to enable it by changing your governor with voltage control (I wouldn't use setcpc). You may find battery and performance fine as it is but if not its worth tweaking to see if you can get improvements. Its also worth trying different schedulers. I got an extra 8% battery a day just from changing that to deadline.

I would use voltage control. Once you are happy with all the settings you have put in and they hanger been tested while in the app press menu and them save as boot. This will create an init.d script which will be run on boot.

Add long as you have a zip of your old kendall on your phone you can just flash it using cwm at any time.
