Root Lost...

Hey,

Just rooted my HTC Desire, in an attempt to get rid of the low internal storage space issue.

I can't seen to figure out what I'm doing when flashing a new ROM? Do I need to change my Radio/Kernal as well as a ROM? I'm rooted with a custom recovery, but not sure which ROM on the provided link in this section of the forum would actually work on my phone.

All I'm after is a stable and simple experience on my Desire. What's the way forwards here?

Leave the radio alone. The kernel comes with the ROM, and while you can change that there's no need to do so.

Which leaves ROM choice. This is very subjective. What is perfect for one person another might hate. The first thing is to ask what you want? Do you like Sense or would you be glad to see the back of it? Do you like a lot of stuff in the ROM, or prefer something more stripped down and add your own apps? Look at the "what rom type are you using" thread to see what people say.

Since lack of space was your main motivation, you should read the root memory faq (from the Desire All Things Root Guide sticky post). Most likely you'll want to partition your card to let a rom use this for app storage - this is described in the faq.

Ok, but it's in reading all that in which I get lost...

Right, I've created a 1GB EXT3 partition on my SD Card, made a NANDROID backup, rooted and S-OFF, and think I'm ready to flash a ROM. How will I make sure that it uses the 1GB Partition now?

Think I'm still a little confused...

All sounding good so far. You need to check the specs of the ROM that you choose. Some roms will automatically use your EXT3 partition, some you have to use Terminal to set it. If you need Terminal it will come with the ROM. After you have installed and are running go to the market and get Quick System Info, it will easily tell you if your EXT3 partition is being used.

The most basic question in ROM choice is do you want Sense or not?

Also remember to back up your apps and data (including contacts, messages) before flashing. A nandroid will restore everything to how it is now, but won't let you restore your apps & data to the new ROM. You need a different backup for that.
