Help loud start up sound - (noob question)

Dear HTC -
I might want to start my phone in a metting without alerting everyone to the fact -
a silent startup option would be really handy

I have heard that you can root the phone and get around this but that seems a little drastic

Paul O'Brian (Modaco) removes the bootsound from his custom Roms.

It is not particularly drastic rooting your phone, I would recommend it to anybody.

As nobody has published a method of rooting the HTC Desire yet I would be interested how you go about rooting it using a drastic method or otherwise?

Well I DOooo apologise for not clarifying my comment but there has been a few phones before the Desire on which you could access root.

I.E. it wasn't "drastic" when I rooted my G1 or when I rooted my Hero.

Hi!

Until we have got root access, if we don't want to low volume manually, there's a free app at market, named "Silent Boot" that automatically lows level of sound at shutdown and then restores it after boot. It is designed for HTC Desire. I have got it and it works perfect.

Regards, folgui.

"Quietly Brilliant" is somewhat ironic when your eardrums are bleeding.

LOL... so true... sigh, another app taking up precious RAM (Silentboot) because of this niggly problem...

Footnote: works with Power downs, not soft reset (the power+vol-down+optical key option)...

Nice one folgui, it was one of my main annoyances!!! Now... Silence! Mmmmm :D

Since moving to the official Froyo 2.2 update, my boot volume has more than halved. Acceptable now with no faffing about.
