Lousy down/up load speed on 3G

Update: Just picked up my 2nd Epic, which is a 8-2010 model/and so is battery (the other one was a 7-2010 model/and battery).

This one does a LOT better! So far the highest I've clocked this new one (outside) is 1784 kbps (3G only right now in Denver). And the highest inside I've clocked this at is 578, but then again - I don't get very many bars inside, maybe 1-3 if I am lucky.

Either way, this is still a major improvement over what I was getting on the other Epic! On the July model that I had, I was lucky to get around 184 as the high - even outside! And most of the time inside, I would get a -0 to 98! lol

I still need to test out the other known issues of this phone, Google map is still showing me within 30 meters, when I ask it to pin-point my location. However, the nav works flawlessly.

Also noticed that the physical keyboard is not as tight as my July model, but since I am finding myself learning and using Swype more when texting - so this may not be a deal breaker for me.

So we'll see - as I still have a little over 2.5 weeks left of my 30-day free trial. But so far, I am happier with this new one. :)

Mine is a july issue and doesn't seem to have any problems.

How do you go about getting a new model? I actually have a defective "O" key on my keyboard. It's hard to press. Sometimes I accidentally hit it twice because there is no "clicky" feedback like the rest of the keys have.

Would that be reason enough to get a new phone?

Yeah, no doubt this issue is random - as the tech at the store also had a July model, and his worked fine too. I only mentioned the date, because someone earlier in this thread asked for dates. No matter to me what date the phone is, I am just happy to be getting much better speed results. :D

I too love this phone. I came from the hero and this phone actually works. The 3g sucks bad on this though so much so that I just switch to wireless if I need something. I was hoping it would be an update fix but after reading on here for a while I see it is a problem. I will be calling sprint now.

Well sprint is saying there is a problem in the area. Lol hope this isn't what they start telling people who have a epic now.

they just called me back, said they checked the towers and they are fine. I told them it seems like an epic problem and no one anywhere can get over 150 uploads. the guy seems genuinely concerned and said they will get back to me as soon as possible and have me swap the device if necessary, not that it would help or anything. But I can't see keeping this thing past 30 days with this type of problem. NOt that I really need the uploads, but this is pretty messed up.

You wouldn't keep a phone due to slow upload speeds? I mean.... really... who does a lot of heavy duty uploading on their phone?

I don't know why there is an issue with slow upload speeds... but it in no way affects my opinion of the Epic. As long as I can download shit fast, I'm happy.

What ever floats your boat, enjoy your phone. For most of us, paying a premium for the data plan and only getting 150 Kbps upload speeds is border line criminal. Put it this way, whenever you want to email a pic which is roughly 1.4 MB in size, it'll take a bit over a min to be done versus the normal 10-12 secs in my area. That's roughly a 6x difference in speed, so when you do a Google search, it'll take 6x the normal time to get a response from Google. When you do a post to a forum, again, 6x slower. Good luck attempting to take advantage of your front cam to video chat. And if you like to share your videos, good luck with that, too, and especially if you want to use YouTube's cloud based editing features (means, you have to upload your whole uncut video to YouTube first). Part of Android's greatness is being able to really multi-task, so all these little processes that linger about due to incompletion = slower overall response.

when I try speedtest.net on my wifes epic... I receive a message on the site saying it has no license... but I can connect on my evo

Anyone seen this? help?

Are you using the free market app or the website? I only get that if I don't use the application.

Application is called "Speedtest.net Speed Test" in the market.

THANKS!!!!!

I tested the:

epic 796 down 152 up

evo 847 down 712 up

second test... outside

epic 846 down 148 up

evo 1085 down 678 up...

yikes on the upload huh?

wow! A fairly big difference between the 2 phones the "up" speed. Hope this can be fixed with an update, but not holding my breath. But for now, my 2nd Epic is doing much better with down and so-so on up. It'll be interesting to see what becomes of this issue, as far as updates go.

half of that stuff I didn't think about, but video chat makes a good point, plus the fact is, its not the uploading that I'm really upset about, its that this phone is broken in GPS and uploading at this point. EVO got many updates coming out quick, you see anything for this thing yet? I'm telling you with samsung, we be lucky to see froyo, you really want to stick around for 2 years if these things turn out to be hardware?

EDIT: I don't know much about phones, but my guess would be these guys gimped out something when going from gsm to cdma. but just a guess, my friend is an RF engineer if I really wanted to find out.

and people think the gps issue is a bigger deal than this? LOL, I think this probably would allow us to ETF free out of our contracts. this is just broken.

Do you have a copy of this list?
A physical copy no? I got a read out over the phone of two lists from Sprint, one specific requests to sammy (there are four current) and one of those generating more than 50 trouble tickets.

If you can beleive it video playback Audio out of sync is one of the four main problems listed by sprint and I dont think it has been mentioned here!

Call and work your way up to "advanced device" support, thy will tell you.

Jim, no offense but that is like saying on GPS bugs, ""who uses GPS, use a dedicated GPS instead" or if there were a camera problem, "who cares about a camera problem get a dedicated camera". These are $500 smartphones, they are supposed to do everything advertised. Many people are going to be upset when it doesn't com near advertised 3g speeds, up or down.

You don't care, that is cool, but that begs the question why are you on this thread!?!

Here is the thing, GPS was placed on phones and the usage grew not just for navigating but a host of location based activities became one of the fastest growing application and usage groups. With Uploads speeds of devices increasing a host of new applications and uses to are now growing.

This phoen has a front facing camera. Comparing usage of video chat between evo and epic one can see right away the problem with slow upload. Then there is sending videos to facebook etc.

On top of that it is especially important for android smartphones which are supposed to be major clued computing exploiters. The cloud is a two way dependency much more than you home net connection.

My epic upload speeds are way slower than not just Evo we are also testing, but than our WM devices including almost two year old Treo Pro -- and I am paying $10 more for slower speeds than two year 3G phones

I originally thought the same, figuring video chat would be the only thing really affected, however another user quickly pointed out social networking. A lot of users upload video directly to these and other sites and is one of the advertised/selling points of many phones now. If it takes you 5x+ over another device to do your upload that is a serious flaw.

It's easy to be happy if one reduces their expectations to match a situation. Even if it's of no real problem for a particular user it's still a cop-out to make those kind of concessions for major functions of the phone.

I've run some tests and have been really unhappy with the results. Somehow I don't think a replacement phone will fix the issue either. Seems as though the fascinate doesn't suffer from these issues either. Just an Epic thing.

Why, why couldn't they make this phone work as expected. SO many good features. SO many problems...

This is BS I can't believe we are paying $10 more a month and getting lame 3g service. I love the phone but this is a deal breaker. Makes me sick companies can lie and charge more for service and we all just jump in and sign the contract because the evo and epic are the only phones worth a damn,at least for sprint. Yet we are still their beta testers.

I hit my "final straw" with the Epic yesterday when I found that the WiFi range was pitiful - showing almost no signal and very slow performance even when a littany of other devices were showing MAX signal,

I've never had so many issues with a device before in my entire life. I don't mind the odd software bug at launch, but a series of issues, all dealing with radio issues, that it isn't clear CAN be fixed by software is just assinine.

Sprint's general cluelessness about the issues (different stories every time I called, none of them making any sense), combined with them not surfacing on any of the major tech sites, and Samsung's track record of reticence in providing updates (let alone timely updates) soured me to the whole experience. I am unconvinced that these issues will ever get properly fixed, and certainly no longer had hope they would do it in the first 30 days.

I returned the device yesterday, tried two others in the store just to attempt to verify it wasn't a broken handset I was dealing with, and when they all acted identically I took advantage of the fact that had Evo's back in stock and swapped the Epic for one of those.

End result: GPS that locks in seconds without needing a reboot to clear the stale cached data, much better GPS SNR, 3G speeds of 2 Mbps downstream and 750 Kbps upstream, WiFi that has acceptable range and no wondering when I'll get Froyo since it's on the Evo now out of the box.

If Samsung ever publically fix the issues (and they are independently confirmed) I'll grab another Epic ... right now I need a phone that has a full complement of properly working features and isn't compromised in its communications functionality.

For everyone waiting it out, I really hope Samsung come through!
