Low Internal Memory

Horvath1

Lurker
I just bought a HTC Desire, and I an getting a warning of Low Internal memory. I havent downloaded apps, but it says i only have 9.2 mb available..

I have a 8gb SD card with 7.4 gb available. I am guessing this phone works on internal memory and nothing to do with the SD card?

I am running Firmware 2.1 update1

I am new to this.... Any one point me in the correct direction?

Thanks

The internal memory of the HTC Desire is the phone's main downfall.

The fact 2.2 and Apps2SD only moves parts of certain apps doesn't really help matters either.

I find it strange that your memory is so low without you downloading apps. Did you buy it new or second hand? Could some apps have been left on the phone by the previous owner?

In your current state, you could clear the cache from as many apps as possible. You can do this by going to Settings > Applications > then clicking on each app and clearing the cache.

I bought it new at Christmas... Looking at the Manager Applications, my Contacts Storage is using 75 mb's , and I only have like 90 contacts... That seems really high.

Is there a way to default the Storage to the SD card instead of the Internal Memory?

Thanks

Your contacts storage is extremely high!

Do you have a GMail account? If so, I'd suggest saving your contacts as Google contacts. They will then be saved to Google rather than your phone and won't take up precious internal storage.

If/when you upgraded to 2.2, you will be able to save parts of certain apps to the SD card - eg. apps which the developer has enabled apps2sd support.

Rooting, and flashing a custom ROM which supports Apps2SD+ is another option. I'd suggest reading up on it first though. It sounds a lot more complicated than it actually is. After you have done this, you can save every app to your SD card. :)

Rooting, and flashing a custom ROM which supports Apps2SD+ Sounds awesome...... ! I will have to read up on that..... Do you know of any threads here that will give some intructions for the desire....? I cant seem to find any, or I am looking in the wrong spot.....

Thanks...

Rooting is not as frightening as you might expect. It's awesome!

I used this guide here:

HTC Desire - [GUIDE] Rootin & Flashing ROM

And flashed the ROM "Leedroid", which is exactly like the HTC Desire sense interface, but it's already running with android 2.3, and a lot of things have been improved. Battery life, speed, less lag, optimised, no adds in apps, sharp 3D gallery, etc.

Also I now have 300 MB free for apps.

After the phone it rooted, you can get Titanium Backup, and do a backup of everything on the phone! So you get all your apps and their data, and settings, system data, placement of apps, etc., back to how they were.

Using this site:

UOT Kitchen

I've further customised my phone. It gives a nice colourful battery circle in the notification bar, with percentage, but there's more!

It also gives the option to get real smiley emoticons, and totally change the notification icons. There are many sets to choose from, I chose one called Color pack v4 animated, which is awesome looking.

Also, there's the ability to personolise the drag-down notification bar, in many ways, change the boot animation (many to choose from).

Finally you can change the window animation to four new ones.

Here you can see how that looks like:
(I'm using the first one, flying).

This is completely inaccurate.

If you want proof. You can try it yourself. Put your phone in airplane mode and you will see that you can still access all contacts and their information.

If the contacts are not stored on the phone, how is that possible????

They are stored on the phone.

I have 130 contacts. Many have photos. They take up less than 3MB of internal memory.

There is no reason you should be rooting your phone in order to fix what seems to be a problem with your contacts storage.

Backup your contacts, remove them all, and then start over and see what happens.
