Help low memory

Despite having .5gb of internal memory left whenever i try to update apps or download new ones I get an error message saying i don't have enough memory (e.g. happens with a 10mb app). All apps and data that can be moved to the external sd card have been moved. I don't understand what's happening or how to resolve this.

You are out of space to install apps on your device.

Install this simple little app called Storage Truth. It's very small and will install in very limited space. It will tell you how much space you actually have left for installing apps:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=sa.storagetruth

To make space you need to:
Delete some texts or emails. If you really have lots, this can help.
Delete or move photos and videos.
Uninstall app updates.
Uninstall apps.
Clear cache files. However, that will only make space temporarily as cache files will rebuild over time. Also, while clearing cache files won't hurt anything, they're there to speed up operation and should be left alone. Not recommended.

Thanks for the advert!

Yes, that's exactly what I did. Storage Truth will show you how much space you have *for apps*, not simply how much empty space you have.

And I gave suggestions on how to free up some space.

I don't know what else you need. Let me know and I'll be glad to help if I can.

Thanks but I really don't think you've grasped what I'm saying. I have over 0.5gb of internal storage yet 10mb apps won't download. I even tried your suggestion but the app won't download because there isn't enough space apparently (as I've already said)

But how much space does Storage Truth say you have *for apps*? Doesn't matter how much empty space you have. Space that can be used to install apps is what counts.

Ahhh...you didn't say that! Storage Truth is pretty small so you really are outta space!

OK, try some of the suggestions in my first reply to make some space. You ought to be able to do something on the list to make some room.

Another way to determine available space is open a terminal and type:
df
...and hit enter. In the resulting output look at the line that starts with:
/data
That line tells you the total space allocated for apps (and some other stuff) and the remaining free space.

If you don't already have a terminal installed, it's about the same size as Storage Truth so you you won't be able to squeeze it in.

As I said, everything that can be moved to SD or deleted that I don't want has been. No idea about "terminal " but no use anyway as can't download.

Why if I still have 0.5gb showing as available after taking into account apps, cache, etc in Storage can't I update /download???

Because as I said, it's not total empty space that matters, it's space in /data that counts. And obviously you've filled it.

If you want to be able to install anything you have to make room. If you don't, soon you won't be able to get email or texts.

Jeze man are we talking in different languages here? No problem with texts emails etc. You can't specifically explain why 0.5gb shown space doesn't allow a 10mb app to download (yes I've read your explanation and it makes no sense in this context). Let's just leave it there and see if someone can provide a logical explanation and solution

I don't know how to put it any simpler. Space in /data is what matters, and clearly you have very little. And since texts and emails are saved in /data, soon they will fail to download also if you don't clear some space.

I hope someone else can think of a way to explain that you can understand.

Postscript.... removed another 10mb app which allowed me to download Storage Truth. It shows I have 485mb system and 758mb data storage free... So I still can't see the previous poster's logic
