It may be a low to mid level phone, but can anyone explain how that makes a difference on whether someone should buy the phone or not. Is there really anything that intensive that people would be running on their Android phone (except 3D games)?

What problems do you expect people to be having with the Aria because of this outdated processor and low resolution?
 
Video playback is one. Size of the screen is another (not all of us have dainty little girl fingers) The amount of ram will affect whether you can run more than just a couple apps, and many apps run natively such as the Mail replacement K9 text replacement Handsent...you start to try and really customize your phone and soon you'll wish you had the memory and processor to support it... if you want vanilla sense...maybe you'll be ok.

as developers get use to the fact that there are 1ghz+ processors out there, they will make apps that will apply to that power. And before your two years are up you'll wish you had thought about buying something that was substandard for the same price as a high end phone.

I can understand if this thing were $50 or free on subsidy...but it's not.

Not everyone uses these really intense apps though. Myself, I use really simple, practical apps.
 
I understand...my point is the pricepoint is a bit high for this phone IMO. The original poster was asking why someone would want more power and I was just trying to answer. If your fine with a weaker phone...go for it :)
 
I personally think the Aria will be plenty powerful enough for most Android users. It should be able to run Google Earth and other apps just fine. It seems that lordmaxx may be a super duper power user and need all 1Ghz of the snapdragon, but for the rest of us I'm willing to bet the Aria will fit quite well.
 
Maybe a little bit of super duper power user ;) I've pushed my little fuze to the limits. But at this point I also have to think of the future. I build computers too and when I'm thinking processor or video card or memory speed I dont just take into account what is hot now. I have to balance Price for power and what will work for the user in a few years.

In this case price is not the issue because this thing is running about the same as a normal smartphone with more power on other networks so Have to think of the future. I just dont like purposely buying substandard components unless there is an upsidej. And I dont see any upside to slower processor and less ram than every other phone that was released this month unless they were to offer this for $50 or less on contract.

This. This times infinite. The iPhone 3g was a great device when it was released. Unfortunately, Apple didn't have to foresight to include a faster processor. My 3g is slow as hell now. If I am listening to a podcast or a song while typing, the keyboard lags. If the device is processing some sort of data while listening to music, the keyboard lags. Navigating through native apps is sluggish and slow with 1-2 second delays between click and the app acting upon that click. I don't want to be stuck in the same situation 2 years from now because I got a phone with a year old processor. I don't have to have the fastest and most current technology. Just something that is going to perform well 2 years from now.

I'm new to Android and am really anxious to get my hands on one. What exactly are some highly intensive apps? Wish I could sort the marketplace by processing power needed. :p

Look through the games. As a general rule, the more stuff moving around on screen, the higher intensity.
 
Understandable with games, but are they the only thing I should be worrying about except multiple apps at a time and possibly videos/streams?
 
And... the MSM7227 is believed to have the same GPU as the Snapdragon. So 3D games should run fairly well.
 
Sling for Mobile will be one...and when/if you get the 2.2 update and Flash 10.1 then all heck is going to break loose.
 
Well 2.2 should come as HTC has promised it will. Guess we'll see though. Not sure if Flash 10.1 is GPU accelerated on Android, but if so it should run almost as well if not as well as the Snapdragon.

Just a guess, but I'm thinking not as you are talking about the 3d accelerator. Flash is just the same as a video being presented on the media player app.

so as I said Slingplayer, Video Media Players, Flash all could be affected by the slower processor. I'm not saying they won't play, the smaller screen size certainly affects that. It's alot easier to pack pixels into 320x480 (they just dont look as good)

But you won't be able to watch as much on the smaller screen. If you don't care about Videos or Flash. and youtube is as far as you want to go, then you'll probably be just fine. I'm looking for a little more though.
 
Just went through Adobe's site and found a couple videos where they confirmed that the mobile version of Flash will be GPU accelerated as well. That's good news for people using the MSM7227 chip(presuming what I read about the GPU is indeed correct). So we should have smooth playback with flash.
 
yes, as long as what you're viewing can fit on the screen you'll be good to go...even better news for those of us hoping for the Galaxy S...please dont screw this one up AT&T pretty please....
