Root LS660 Root/Recovery

Please note, this is not my work and I do not take credit for it as such. I am merely providing these useful links to help others with active development. I myself do own this device however, and I will be happy to assist others as much as I can, and as often as I can.

Root disclaimer, I am not responsible for any bricks, loss of service, bugs, glitches or anything else you choose to do to your device. Proceed at your own risk, as always, make a backup.

***Special notes regarding OTA updates. It is highly recommended that you allow your phone to completely update before installing TWRP and BEFORE REMOVING ANY SYSTEM APPS! If you are not on Zv5 you can encounter a recovery bootloop if you try to take the OTA update. If you have already debloated and are on Zv4 it is still possible to update to Zv5 if you already have a TWRP backup. This may also work without a backup, testing is needed however. See below for instructions.***

Root; follow the instructions found here.

TWRP (Use root rashr, or flashify to install as recovery.)

Zv4 to Zv5 Workaround.

1. Grab the following files from this Zv5 backup. https://mega.co.nz/#F!DMVWTQKa!QTYe1H-nMI4gBoPlIz7VpA
boot.emmc.win
boot.emmc.win.md5
data.ext4.win
data.ext4.win.md5
data (info)
system.ext4.win
system.ext4.win.md5
system (info)
recovery (log)
(Note, DO NOT flash any files that were not listed, you will ruin your service.)

2. Place them in a folder named anything you like. (No spaces or special charactures.) And place the folder inside the twrp backup folder on your device. See attachment for an image of the folder structure.

3. Reboot into recovery. Wipe data, cache, and system. Then flash the backup provided in step 1. (If you cannot see the backup, verify the folder structure.)

4. Reboot the system, verify the phone boots properly and has your phone number in the about phone section of settings, and also verify that you have Zv5 under software in the same neighborhood.

5. Reboot back to recovery, then wipe data, and flash ONLY your data partition from your Zv4 backup. Reboot, and you should now have 3g/4g working again. Make a backup, debloat again if you wish. Done!

*This may work without flashing the data partition from your Zv4 backup, however I cannot confirm this. 3G/4G does not seem to work without flashing the Zv4 data partition, though manually updating the prl might get around this. If anyone would like to try, please post the results.

Any other ways to root the Tribute. Tried many times and Su never installs neither does busybox. Nothing Seems to work.

As of this time there are no other ways that I know of to achieve root for this device. Are you using the one click gui version or the non gui version?

i have both versions, i have tried both several times, I have reinstalled the drivers, different cords have been used. Still no luck.

Okay, here's some things for you to check.

Does the command adb devices list your phone? If not, check to make sure you're plugged into a USB 2.0 port, the connection type is set to mtp, and also that you've authorized your pc to connect to your phone. If the above is satisfied... Run the GUI version with administrator privileges while your phone is connected, make sure you follow the prompt, and when it says to do so, disconnect and power down your phone, then while holding the Vol+ button plug it back into the USB cable. You should see a firmware update screen. From there just wait until the GUI tells you it finished, grab some coffee it takes about 5-10min. Then reboot, and do the whole process once more. I've used this on 2 tributes so far, always works the second time around. If this still doesn't get it working, you probably need to install/reinstall java and adb and/or make sure it's in your environment path.

Rooting tips...
1. Make sure to update Java for Windows in your PC first.
2. Make sure you have the needed LG drivers installed, after the Java update.
3. Take a look at the usb cable you're using. I use an LG usb sync cable I got with my VM LG F3. Some phones will only sync thru the manufacturer's cable. (They'll do everything to keep us "dependent!) If you're using a cheap cord, sync communication may not be complete enough to root. I sync pics thru a cheap cable, but the same cable won't push thru adb. The better LG cable works for adb push. Just a observation.
4. If your Windows pc is old, (Vista or XP) then rooting via adb will be problematic. Make sure to update as much as you can for Vista & XP computers.
5. A small, but helpful tip, make a new folder in your pc to put all your files for this phone including the storage of the ALL IMPORTANT first nandroid backup. Don't have a " rooted life" without one!

I found some versions of windows are not nice to this phone. I have had great results using windows 7 over vista or xp and works better than windows 8.1. Not tried yet on windows 10 technical review version.

The first couple times I rooted my first few Tributes it was on Windows 8.1 without a hitch although I'm better with Win8 now but I almost think it's got more to do with what you're running on your p.c. than the actual operating system but hey opinions vary!

I think it is my phone. the program will not write to my phone. If i take the sd card out when trying to root it dont do anything.

Windows 10 preview x86 (32bit) works perfectly running SDK Tools & ADB Bridge if you install Java and the phone drivers first. Rooted my Tribute thru W10p with no problems!

Sent by a "liberated" Tribute!

This saved my phone, ty! Worked like a charm. I did NOT flash Data, and instead Updated PRL, then reset phone. Once I did, I reactivated using the SelfService Module. Reset device again, working 3/4g. Works like new now, no issues. Thanks alot, you saved my life... literally. Had my phone remain bricked upon the GF returning home... it would have been curtains for me :P

For some reason this doesnt work on my tribute. I've rooted via kingo root (works). But flashing this via rashr doesn't let me boot into twrp. Idk what im doing wrong

If Rashr doesn't work, try Flashify. It does work. No problems, just uninstall Flashify after you've confirmed you have working TWRP. Flashify is a big app, and will take up a lot of memory space if you leave it installed.

and just an FYI...Kingo Root installs it's own supersu. If you use the LG Root Tool, it'll
install SuperSU. (the same one being supported on XDA Developer Forums, where the
original dev has a support site). That one is preferable due to the ongoing support of it's
team. That means It'll only get better! Don't know about the Kingo Supersu. It's still very new. Just sayin!

Maybe update Java via internet. The common communication language between Windows C++ and Androids
is Java script. Always keep Java & Windows up to date when "hacking" an Android. Also update your phone drivers, and maybe your SDK Tools. If you have an old platform, your ADB bridge may not be working as it should to "push" the root exploit to your phone. I'm not an android dev, but I am a retired Windows C++ tech. The "miscommunication" is probably a Windows thing!

Yeah and Idk how to change the su. Plus with this su. Flashify kept saying it couldn't get root.

Who ur provider

Virgin mobile

By chance does your LG Tribute come from walmart with the "data done right" plans??? If so that Tribute definitely has software that is different than the Tribute you buy direct from virgin mobile and that uses virgin plans vs the partnered walmart plans. Could be the way that device is setup. I do know they work very differently

Yes. I got it at Walmart and it's prepaid via VM.

All of the Tributes sold by Walmart are part of the "data done right" partnership with virgin mobile. Those devices are not the same as the ones sold on virgin mobiles website. The software is different. I would bet anything thats why you are having issues. Take it back to Walmart for a refund and put your money on top up card and buy the original from virgin mobile on their website.

I bought & rooted 3 Tributes from Walmart & have been using them since. I even bought another Volt from Walmart & that's rooted with twrp, that's my daily driver but my Tributes are for my girl & kids. I used the one click lg root for the tribute & dptools for the volt. Trust me the only part that sucked was having to deal with the data done right people when I originally got my tribute and wanted to switch my original Virgin Mobile # over to my new data done right Tribute! But these Are my opinions, some may have bad luck? I was on ZV5 on both devices! Both with TWRP.
