LTE Tiered Data To Begin July 7th

Generally you are safe if you don't change plans. you can switch phones at will. the problem is that they can force a different plan on you with new phones. the iPhone for instance is one where we got forced off the 150mb plan.

Verizon to Start Tiered Data Plans in July, Plans Revealed
Written by Humberto Saabedra on June 20, 2011

Verizon

Verizon spokesperson Brenda Raney has confirmed to the media that Verizon Wireless will move away from unlimited data plans to a usage-based plan lineup in July. This follows months of confirmation by other Verizon representatives that the carrier would also move to a usage-based model for monthly data access in order to ease the strain on its data network as a result of the rapid increase in smartphone usage. More details will be officially forthcoming. Read more for what the slate of plans will look like when they launch on July 7th and what to do to lock in unlimited data until the 6th.
The following slate of plans will be rolled out on July 7th for new customers and customers that upgrade without an unlimited data plan already on the account:

Data plans for smartphones and featurephones:
2GB

Man can't you people read? it said even after july 7th if you already have unlimited you are grandfathered.

I hope you're right. I read a couple of articles and the two posts in this thread and that assumption doesn't seem confirmed.

You know what bugs me about tiered pricing, its the way companies price their tiers. I hate knowing that I'm paying more per gig than the higher data users. Verizon is making money on the ones who aren't the ones abusing the data. I mean I understand why they are doing it, but it just bugs me.

I just wished they would just charge a $1.00 per 100 mbs for everyone. I think that's fair. Allow tethering and make people pay for the data they use. I think that would fix data abusing too.

How is it unfair or have anything to do with anyone other than the person thats using the data and verizon? If I use one or one hundred gigs, my data doesnt infringe on your connection. This isnt DSL.

I totally agree about not infringing on my connection speed or my ability to use my data..but apparently the reason why VZW and others are going to tiered plans is due to the high data usage that they are experiencing and the cost to provide the bandwidth. I understand their logic when they say 2gb or less is what most people need but in theory they are charging those customers more than higher data users. So I think it would be more fair if everyone pays the same rate. Why can't they start the tiered pricing at $20 for a 2gig plan? Don't you think the people who have had the $29.99 data plan and have been using less than 2gigs deserve a tax break? Haha? I mean some of these people have been paying $15-30 or more per gig for years! at least give them some rollover gigs..lol.

Btw, I like your avatar pic. Is that beyonce??? Jk

In reality, these prices aren't that bad, my problem is that they just start high. For example, they are offering $50 for 4GB of data with tethering. On my AT&T plan, I get 2GB of data, with no tethering, for $25. My issue is that even with tethering, I, and probably at least 80% of smartphone users use less than 1gb a month. I would have liked to see a $25/month 2GB with tethering from verizon. On the other end, I don't really have any pity for the people using 15gb a month and expect to be charged the same amount as my mom who uses less than 200mb.

At least they aren't treating 3g and 4g differently. I hope some carrier gets it right and ignore 3g and 4g, ignore whether you're tethering or not, and just charge based on how much data you're using, which would also mean acknowledging that some users barely use any data.

Maaaaaaaaaaan. Beyonce cute, but she aint got shit for body.:-P Imma chubby chasin BBW lovin brutha. I like fat chicks, I dont give a damn. lol.

VZW is doing nothing more than trying to make more money. Theres no point to a tiered data plan other than them making more money.

Yeah, I have the Bolt so I keep unlimited data for two years. But I never keep a phone past two years. And when we upgrade you can be sure that the new device won't be compatible with the old unlimited data plan. We will have to move to a teir if we want a new device. Probably even if we buy one outright. That's how VZW does it.

I don't know about you, but at 31, and the older I get, years go by pretty fast. I plan for the future and I don't like this price increase. I especially dislike price increases when I'm getting nothing in return. Just paying more for what we paid less for previously.

Maybe if they throw in VZ Nav or or something I'd be a bit more ok with it. If not, I'll try to keep this device as long as possible. Or I may ditch a smartphone altogether.

true I shouldn't have left those out!

You will have unlimited 4g for the entire 2 years.

I don't know how it works after the 2 year contract is up. I also don't know what would happen if you a bought another 4g phone retail and activated it during the 2 years.
I think that once your contract is up they could legally do whatever they want to your account. Without a contract the customer has no bargaining chip :-/ Sprint will be next. I'm hoping this is a fad like the "minutes of the Internet" that AOL did way back when. With everything going to the cloud this is a really bad move for all the carriers. Also, if I get forced into an upgrade in 2 years I won't be using 4G. 2GB tier on a 4G network? Good luck with that haha

If they try to force this down, I could see myself dropping out of my voided contract and switching to AT&T, which is sad :( I don't like them lol At least I could travel with my phone at that point though

I know a lot of the details are up in the air, but I'm hoping that someone can help me with this. I am currently have a Dinc and the contract is up in December. I've been getting the early upgrade emails/mailings and have ignored them so far. I am currently on a family plan with my mother. I have the smartphone, she just has a regular phone. My fiancee is wanting to join my plan because she wants an iphone (...sigh...). Should we jump on this now and take the early upgrade & add my fiance before July 7th?

It's sounding like we should to get another 2 years of unlimited data! Any advice/insight/suggestions would be appreciated.

Really not a smart move - nobody is going to like the change, a few are going to tolerate the change, and everyone is going to lose something in the change.

I don't understand. The max data I've EVER used was still under 1gb in a month. I lose nothing. For me, it's like having a region-free DVD player; it sounds like a great feature but I have no DVDs which aren't region 1. I'd never use that feature just as I'll never break 2gb in a month. I agree it would have been nice if they lowered the price of the lowest tier by $5 but Verizon's business model is nickel and diming it's customers. I think most people knew that going in. I sure did so this is no surprise. Actually the only surprise is that this deal isn't worse. I figure they'd bone us for sure.

Most of the sheep will not notice or care. The other power users will be mad, but are you going to go to ATT with the horrible coverage and worse service for $5 a month?

I don't think the term "sheep" is called for in this context. If it doesn't affect me why should I get worked up about it? If it does end up affecting me, there are other carriers. Lately Sprint has been looking more promising since they seem to have a better attitude about rooting and ROMs. They also have pretty decent coverage in this area. I have no loyalty to Verizon and will jump ship if Verizon becomes intolerable and Sprint has a phone I'd want.

Sure, I understand that not everyone will be affected but that's different from losing something in your plan.

Most people would be angry if their cable company called and said, "we're going to keep charging you the same amount of money, but we're taking away 30 channels" - even if they never watch those channels. It's just a feeling of getting screwed - technology progresses forward and gets cheaper by the day, we should only be gaining. Service costs shouldn't go backwards. By "losing something" I mean everyone is ONLY losing, nobody is gaining anything. That's all.

AT&T did the smart thing. They dropped the lowest tier by $5, so the vast majority of customers were happy - it seriously took the bite out of the tiered data plans if there's a tradeoff. You get a cap, but you also get a discount. I just think it generates a lot of ill will in the customer base when you remove service but keep charging the same amount.

Remember it only takes one bad apple to make the bushel bad. Every thought they figured might as well nip it in the bud before the majority does the free wireless tether?

Charging tiered pricing LTE has always been their plan. It's delusional to think a few wireless tetherers caused LTE to be tiered.

Anyways I'll still have wireless tether for a long time because I am either keeping 3g unlimited for a long time or locking into Verizon unlimited LTE with the tBolt or switching to Sprint so either way I'll still have unlimited tethering for at least 2 years.

I just checked data usage out of curiosity... it's 2.2GB for the month as of right now... so $30 for 2GB is a damn joke. Less for more/same $ is the new motto of our society.

T-mobil's system isn't too bad. 2gig of full speed data cheap and then reduced speed.
2gig on lte is good for about 30 min of full speed streaming. I'll take unlimited 3g instead. Boost has a $40 promo right now. Sheep is right. We are getting fleeced.

You guys are in a tough spot. I used my last NE2 on a two year upgrade to the Bolt just in time. After two years is what I'm concerned about.

Dish network did the same thing. Just added 5 a month to my plan, adding no channels. Just a rate increase. That really gets me. The contract states rates can increase at anytime. So the contract only protects Dish network.Crazy. I threatened to cancel and they took the charge off.

It's what cell phone companies are doing now. It used to be minutes is what determined your big expense. The reality is that it costs the companies almost nothing for you to talk non-stop. It's the data that they allege now is the big cost.

So your talk plan stays the same, your data goes up, and the company jams you up with it's sneaky way to get more money out of you. I remember in September of last year when I was looking at a few phones that were not smart phones, they still required me to have a 9.99 data plan. I eventually just got an Android(which I'm happy with), but I pitched a fit to Verizon about it and they said those phones have capabilities to browse internet(uh, every phone does) and therefore using 3G services required it. I said I was only using it for talking(no email, nada). They didn't care. I told them it was a way to suck an extra 10 bucks from me and then was told to either stay relevant or the conversation was over. Go figure.

I don't care about Verizon's network. I'm in the DC area and it's pretty hard to find a dead spot on any network here. Come Sep-2012 I'm going to begin comparing networks as opposed to just phones.

Yeah, I think I'm getting tired of wireless fees. Even the 40 a month for 450 is high. I tolerate that because at least we get unlimited night, weekends, and VZW calling.

Text plans are a rip off too. This may be the straw for me...

Great, I'm coming over from AT&T soon with whom I still have a grandfathered Unlimited data plan. These changes are making the move over to Verizon seem not as sweet as it once seemed like.

Then again, I've looked at my usage with AT&T and over the last year and I've never went over 1.25 GBs of usage, most of the time it's down around 700 MBs and the only reason I spiked to 1.1 GBs is that that month I ended up streaming a lot of music on the phone from Slacker Radio. Oh well, I guess that I'll cache my Slacker Radio music so as to not stream it.

I could get by with the 2 GB plan and if I go over by 1 GB (it's possible) at least the hit of $10 isn't too bad. I really don't see myself going over 2 GBs. The overage charges could be worse.

I wonder what the family data plans will cost and for how much data.

Though, I do wish the plans were $5 cheaper.

That's what I'm thinking. I've been with VZW for 7 years. If they let me grandfather in I'll stay until renewal time. Then I'll switch to AT&T. I plan on hitting up a few countries in the next few years so it might be beneficial anyway. Not only that but they're cheaper.
