LTE Tiered Data To Begin July 7th

The article states that the pricing is for 3G and LTE, so would rushing out and getting a 4g phone really be necessary?

Only thing it does is lock you in for 1 extra year of unlimited (assuming your upgrading a year early)

There are no more 1 year upgrades/contracts. You'd be locking yourself in for 2 years.

Yeah but people that got the X on release day still have a year left on their original contracts...meaning we all have a year left of unlimited data anyway...

Signing a new contract today in reality only nets you an extra year...

Oh well, I'm not going to worry about it. I have about a year left on my contract and if this prices are accurate, I'll be forced to switch carriers. My wife and I both use about 5GB per month and I wont pay $100 a month just for data.

But wouldn't you still retain your plan if you simply bought a new/different phone at retail price if it was before your contract was up?

I know with at&t you're still grandfathered in even when you update phones and contracts...

If you pay full retail, unlimited should remain. Get a discount, even transferring an upgrade from another line on your plan, and be prepared for tiered data. At least this is what I was told by VZ when I inquired about using the available upgrade on my 2nd line get a new phone on my main line in the future. Basically, if you have to sign a new contract for any reason, your unlimited data is gone. No grandfathering for old customers.

I figure in another year you could still get 300-400 for a tbolt and the new phones will be 5-600 so your difference works out to be 2-300 which is what you woulda paid anyway had you resigned a contract...

Oh, I see what you mean.
For me, the length of the contract is not the prime factor. I'll buy phones off contract if I have to but these data rates are insane. I plan on selling my DX and Charge (if I end up getting it) to help cover the cost of upgrading when a better phone launches.

OK - dumb question - is there an app on the TB for data usage?? I would be interested. I guess I could go online and check - but - where's the fun with THAT??? LOL

WOW
I thought I used a decent amount. . .
26 of 31 days
1.031GB of Unlimited

Well with everyone who does that free wireless tether as their home internet trying to save money and screw verizon. Now they call foul on verizon doing the tier data plans. So everyone thank the ones who wanted wireless tether for free. They are the main reason for this as to keep the network from being over worked. SO dont blame verizon for trying to bring the bad ones under control.

Ugh. I'm not even close to a power user and I use 6GB a month. I'm not paying over $30 a month for data on a cell phone. That's crazy.

I don't tether or even have Netflix or Skype unofficially. Pure greed VZW.

I thought upgrading your phone extends, or essentially replaces, your current contract to 2 years?

Also, your contract running up doesn't mean your rates will change. I'm still on a VERY old family plan, and even with upgrading my phone and adding data when I got my X, they didn't pull any bs of having to upgrade the family's plan. This could essentially mean you could indefinitely lock yourself into unlimited 4G until you make it necessary for them to change your plan.

We all knew that 4g would have tiered plans because the speed IS fast enough to lure people into dropping their home internet service. Don't blame the people illegally tethering today for these changes however. The amount of people doing that is a tiny fraction of V customers. They are doing it because they can. Competition is less available today with companies merging together, and the competition is already moving towards tiered plans themselves. So Verizon knows that it will piss people off, but they won't loose a lot of customers over it. Short term pain for long term profit in the companies eyes.

Nah not true.

Most users don't use wireless tether as their home wifi. I have wireless tether but I don't use it for home wifi.

You are also incorrect in saying that wireless tether users are the cause of the high pricing. That would make me feel pretty powerful and good actually; but it simply isn't true (I wish it was though - good story to tell).

The very small fraction of users who use wireless tether as a home hot spot would be throttled and Verizon would know who they are based on such high GB usage.

Verizon had tiered data in their eyes (along with LTE) long before they knew about wireless tethering becoming a big issue.

I'll give you a hint - it is much simpler than your guess - and SeekerOfTheWay nailed it. It's called corporate greed.

Exactly. Thanks Sic.

This is a HUGE mistake by Verizon. I've been grandfathered into a voice plan and a text plan and had every intention of being grandfathered into the unlimited data plan as well. I have been a customer for over 10 years and if the above is true (which I'm 99.9% sure it is) and I can't keep the unlimited data plan I've had for the past 5 years if I buy a subsidized phone then I'll be going to Sprint and buying whichever HTC phone is the best at the time. Way to completely screw over all your customers, Verizon.

I wouldn't get too attached to this plan. Considering you can buy a brand new Bolt right now for under $500 I don't see anyone buying a year old one for $300-$400. I know someone who sold his 2 month old TB on eBay a month ago for $270. Now that full retail phones aren't $599 anymore the prices of used phones took a HUGE hit.

I agree with you completely. I cannot confirm that this is VZ's "official" policy, but it is what was conveyed to me at my local corporate store.

What would happen if after 2 years with my Bolt, I accidentally broke or lost it? $100 deductible, and what device would I get? Another Bolt or one newer but similar? Could I keep my unlimited data using the insurance replacement device?

so you are against corporate greed but ok with personal greed just as long as it sticks it to big companies.

You need to remember its a cell phone and not your personal computer. So netflix isn't really needed. Skype isn't needed its just a fad. Remember video phones? Look at how that died years ago. Most you need data is to check email and really that's about it. Most everything else is a luxury.

Remember it only takes one bad apple to make the bushel bad. Every thought they figured might as well nip it in the bud before the majority does the free wireless tether? Wireless tether was just made for people on the go. That are in airports and need to conduct business while away from the office. Not to be a 24/7 personal home router. Look at it let's see you get speeds of 20 down and 5 up from a cable company for $30 a month.

I won't lie as I enjoy surfing the web and streaming music. When I have to go to a tier plan I will modify my usage and not cry a river of how unfair Verizon is being. After all its their towers so they can do what they please. You can either pay or take your business elsewhere. Really where can you go and not really have a tiered plans.

The good days of somewhat affordable data are coming to an end, fellas. Slowly but surely. Now that lots of companies are paying for data to keep their employees on the go and in the know, its natural to see prices increase. Push comes to shove, I'll cancel the whole damn thing and live like its 1999.

Actually, my smartphone *is my personal computer. I sold my last laptop in 2000 because it was getting too expensive for monthly internet and Pc upgrades. So I do use my phone in place. I can't imagine paying $50 for internet on a cell phone. Seems silly.

I'll probably just get a tab instead and a pay as you go phone. Or no phone. I used 30 minutes this month...

This is what I was afraid of...

Their tiered pricing is high. I use about 3.5 gigs on average. I can probably knock it down to 2 gigs but then my smartphone won't be as fun to have.

Well, what can you say? When you have the best, you get to name your price. Why be pissed off at Verizon? Nothing stays at the same price forever. Milk, bread, data, and divorce...... it will always be like that.

But given that..........

I just got a Charge (rooted and tethering it via Barnacle), a few weeks ago, and have another upgrade with my wife's account that doesn't get used anymore, (yes, its an extra $10/mo, but my company pays for everything). We have an old flip phone assigned to it, and if and when I want another upgrade, I will upgrade her phone to the latest and greatest android device, (adding a data plan), then immediately switch it back to the old flip phone with the "non data" service, and assign my# with the UNLIMITED data plan to the new phone. Should keep me unlimited for a while.
