LTE Tiered Data To Begin July 7th

Admittedly that was the main reason but I also wanted a 4G phone with the grandfathered 4G unlimited rate. Not to mention there is another phone on the plan (without data) that isn't due for an upgrade before 7/7.
So if it does turn out that verizon is treating both 3g and 4g as the same data plan that can be upgraded at old rates, that's good news for the other phones on the plan and only makes me feel a little silly.
 
Question, I have an LG chocolate touch a non smartphone, if I were to add the unlimited data package before 7/7 do you think that would allow me to be grandfathered in? I ask because I would like to upgrade to a smartphone, but I'm not eligible for one until August and would like to have unlimited data. What do you think?
 
My question is almost identical to jgoldy's. I have a dumbphone and am moving to NYC on the 6th of July. Once in the city, I'll be able to meet people selling their phones and find a good used one, but until then, I'm stuck either paying full price or buying what might be a defective phone.

So, can I upgrade to the unlimited data on, say, the 5th of July even with my dumbphone? Then buy a used smartphone and transfer service to that?

That's a good question. I would think it would work since the unlimited data plans are treated the same for both featured phones and smartphones now. The only difference is, feature phones also have the $10 option for data.
 
Is anybody else confused about the statement regarding corporate discounts? I've read it like 20 times and still don't have a clear understanding...

BUSINESS DISCOUNTS- Currently our business discounts apply to the $29.99 data plan on the primary line only. Most discounts are 20% despite whatever monthly access discount they have
BUSINESS DISCOUNTS- After 7/7/2011 data discounts will only apply to the $50 and higher data packages on the primary line.
Discount break down ex. of customers with a 20% feature discount on their primary line. ($50-20%=$40/month for 5GB and includes the business e-mail feature)

If I have a 20% discount on both my data/voice family plans on my main line, does that get effected (I have the standard 29.99 unlimited)?
 
People seem to have forgotten that Data Plans are a "feature" and not part of the service contract. All these people that think that they are safe until their contract ends are not considering this fact. You have always been able to drop, change, add, modify, etc, etc, etc your data plan while in or out of a contract period.

Now it looks like V is going to grandfather the existing users in anyway, so this probably doesn't matter. But I thought it was important to remind everyone that Data is not under your service agreement, but rather it is a stand alone add on feature.

You make it sound like it's optional. I'm not trying to be mean or flame you; but I had to get the data package when I got my Droid. There was no choice about it.

Err...you mean like the 2 LG Env touches(Multimedia phones, not Smartphones), I purchased for my wife and stepson and was forced to pay $10.00 per month per phone ?

As far as I know these phones don't require data in order to work !

From the way I reading Verizons new and improved pricing, unless you are paying $50.00 or more per month for a data plan (Main line), and excluding granfathered, long time customers on the 29.99 unlimited, you will not receive your 20% company discount.

I'm in the same boat and will see my bill increase by $6.00 !

Kind of like going to Walmart........"Hey this is only 5 bucks ! And this is on sale for $9.99 ! By the time you get to the register, your dropping a hundred dollar bill on the counter !

Just sayin' !

Feature phones require data plans. They are just cheaper lesser data plans.

Sometimes research is good before buying phones. Or anything really.

Well that blows. That's how I was interpreting it, but I was hoping I was wrong.
 
Verizon and AT&T try to justify these plans by saying that the majority of consumers use less than 2GB of data so your prices will either stay the same or go down. While that may have been true for most people 1 or 2 years ago, more and more popular apps are using increased data. Netflix, Pandora, Rdio, Slacker, BeyondPod, Slingbox, Audible

Had the same phone as the LG Env Touch the year before, it was called the Voyager and "NO" data plan was required to operate that phone.

Do you own stock in Verizon ?:eek:

The year before with the voyager it wasn't a requirement to have a data plan on the phone. The next year there was with the Env Touch. That is just how it is. Companies are allowed to change pricing and policies as they so see fit. They are a for profit company. Do I like it much? Not really. But I am for capitalism and a free market.

You are definitely allowed to pay the etf on your line(s) and switch companies if you don't like it that much. But go to any other cell provider forum and you will see the same sorts of rants. All of them changing something or other that people are ticked off about. They are all for profit companies and deal with their bottom line first. It's how business works. In the end you have to decided what company works best for you and is the lesser of the evils.

Personally I don't get all the bitching. Especially by the people who are grandfathered into unlimited data plans!
 
People should be angry. At least when ATT did this they lowered the price and added an even lower tier which most people can use. Keeping the price the same, but putting a limit is just crazy. It is pure greed.

My point is that it isn't the end of the world. It is a cell phone. There are other companies. If you hate it that much then switch companies to one that suits you better. It isn't that difficult to figure out.
 
I've decided to bite the bullet and just go for a Thunderbolt, they are only $130 now on Amazon Wireless. This way I can get locked into the $30 unlimited data, which I'm going to abuse to the max now just to give Verizon the middle finger for not allowing me to wait for the next gen phones (dual-core, Ice Cream Sandwich, 1GB of memory) coming out the second half of this year.
 
Oh yeah, I got signed up for Verizon today and locked myself into the Unlimited Data Plan. I'm happy.
 
Okay I have three phone all that have unlimited data i'm not up for upgrade's till Jan 2012 , tell me if i'm wrong I will be able to upgrade to a new 3g phone but not 4g phone's or both.All our phone's are on a family plan if that matter's.

I thought of switching, but other carriers just don't have the coverage in the places I frequent the most. I can real with 2GB. It sucjs, but there's not really anything that can be done.

But you could downgrade to a non-data phone and drop the data plan completely during your contract without any problems or penalties. The two year contract is a contract for service and the phone your choose requires a data plan, but the contract does not stipulate that you have to use that phone or continue your data plan should you change phones to a non-smart phone.
