Help M8 loops in bootloader only

tvdan

Lurker
I have read many posts and dont know where to start. Have a M8 that must have corrupted during a update.
Unit is totally stock. Not rooted and s must be on and USB devoloper option must be disengaged. The phone has been replaced but I am trying to get the pictures off before returning for warranty. All I want is to boot the phone and get the folders. It will not connect to computer or HTC sync manager. Tried rom on a SD card but not one thing has gotten past the bootloader loops. It will power down and up and HDboot and those things. How can I get a OS on to try and recover the data, or is it to late already. Thanks in advance. Phone is verizon in USA and has no sim card. Dont think I need a sim card to boot or do I.

nope, you do not need a sim card to boot. I'm not sure how you can get your files off if it will not boot. You can try to factory reset it via the bootloader and see if that will make it boot, then you can retrieve files such as photos since the factory reset will only wipe out the 3rd party apps you installed and google/facebook accounts, etc.
Here is a video on how to factory reset in the bootloader:
The factory reset may fix your phone so you do not have to exchange it for another.
Maybe in the future invest in an auto backup for photos such as Google+ in case your phone gets broke or stolen. I use Google+ for this: https://support.google.com/plus/answer/1647509?hl=en
Good luck

Thank you for the reply. I did watch that video and the factory reset did not help. It just goes right back to the locked bootloader menu. I did not know however that a factory reset would not erase the photos though. I tried a ROM I found on a forum written on a sd card and it starts to unzip but crashes when it says "wrong or no image" I was hoping maybe there was another rom I could boot with. If I go through the HTCDEV unlocking bootloader procedure that I understand will wipe the photos off. So I hope someone has any kind of a ROM I can boot with to recover the pictures and then the phone can be sent back. Thanks.

Yes I have, all the time. Its amazing to me how a phone can go corrupt from a update before the
update has properly installed with absolutely no recovery on this stock phone. No attempts were
ever made to modify it. It just basically went bad. The bootloader menu is the only thing that works. Thanks.

When you get to the bootloader, what numbers does it say (screen picture appreciated if not too blurry, doesn't need to be a work of art)?

Depending on how far it got, I may or may not be able to point you to an RUU - an HTC facility to force install a full image to your phone.

We don't get to see all of those so depending on what you come back with, you may need to get it to a Verizon service center so that they can flash the right one.

I know. I'm just the messenger. :p

Fwiw, frustrating as this is, it happens and at least the top manufacturers provide a service facility to fix it.
