Magically Create Space

I suppose I should have said that of course, everything possible is moved to SD, and I never really use those apps I downgraded – they are expendable in my case.

late: Another beast that actually can be uninstalled is Google Play Services, even though it’ll just reload after a couple days.

This is a beef I have with Android. Most of, if not all of the carrier-installed apps, even if the app is not even carrier-specific, like Facebook (which I do not use), cannot be uninstalled without rooting the phone.

The iPhone is no different. Even my laptop has this problem. It came with a trial of Office 2010. I own Office XP and love it. Short of a full wipe there is no way to fully get rid of 2010.

You should be able to uninstall the trial of office.

This is why I will always root my devices. I choose what stays and what goes :)

Should yes. But once I do I still get updates for 2010. It isn't in add/remove programs, bit it is still on the computer.

I always root my android devices too. I love custom ROMs.

It's not an Android or Google problem at all. It's strictly a carrier/manufacturer problem.

My unrooted Android Skyrocket is still showing a "Low on space" message in the notifications bar at the top and I've done everything you mentioned.

Do I need the Synchronize and the Media Storage apps and are there any other bloatware apps that came with this phone that I can delete or at least disable?

For what its worth, this is whats going on.

This is what it says on the "Memory usage" page...

-Device memory: 1.9GB used - 63MB free
-On SD card: 642MB used - 11GB free
-Running: 479MB used - 289MB free
-All: 1.9GB used - 63MB free

This is what I've done so far...

- All factory installed apps that I can't delete and don't use are disabled.
- Moved every app I can over to my SD card.
- Deleted almost all photos in photo gallery.
- Deleted the GoSMS Pro texting app even though I like it and started using the native text app instead cuz its a fraction of the size.
- Restarted phone and also turned it off and on again.[/INDENT]

I've done all of the above and I'm still seeing the "Low on space" message in the notifications. Can someone tell me what else I can do to get rid of this please?

Phone details...

-Samsung SGH i727 Galaxy S2 Skyrocket (unrooted)
-Android version: 4.0.4
-Baseband version: i727UCLF6
-Kernel version: 3.0.8
-Build number: IMM76D.UCLF6

Disabling apps will have NO effect.
Deleting photos, documents, etc. will have NO effect. These are NOT saved in the same memory space that apps are installed in.

Clear caches and uninstall some apps to make space. Deleting emails will also make room as they ARE saved in the same memory space that apps are installed in.

Now I think there is something wrong with my phone. I deleted a bunch of apps from my phones memory (that couldn't install on my SD card) and some were big fat apps of many MB's like the Go Launcher and Adobe Flash Player but I'm stilling seeing the "Low on space" message. Then I restarted the phone and it still says my phone has only 160MB of memory left...which is the same memory I had before I deleted all those apps!

And in case I missed something when manually clearing caches, I tried to install the Easy Cache Cleaner (only 620KB) and I'm getting a message saying there is "insufficient storage", when again, my phone says it has 160MB left.

Does anyone know how I can fix this please?

P.S. I disabled unnecessary apps only because it seems that my phones battery life is less than it used to be even though I just bought a new battery.

Check your browsers and clear their data/cache. They can both build up quite a bit.

I use Storage Analyser to scan my devices and display what is hogging my space. Tombstones and log files can build up quite a bit.

Apps that cache music/video for offline play also will take a lot of space. Both Google Play Music and Amazon MP3 will both save the music in /data/data/...

You are right! Right after I made my last comment I did a search online and found an article that recommended to clear the browsers cache. This was the only thing I hadn't done and that fixed it! I do this all the time on my computer but it never occurred to me that my phones browser collects so much junk too.

Thank you.

So, what is "Google Play Services" anyway?

I searched for it on the web, but mainly found Google's self-promoting blurbs about how it would enhance my Android experience. I just want to free up some memory - my Android experience doesn't need enhancing...

Second, and most important, I go through Settings > Manage Applications > Applications, then tap Sort by Size. Then I tap built-in Google apps and uninstall their ginormous updates. I do that with Maps, Voice Search, Youtube and turn Google Play back into Android Market. That last keeps reinstalling itself, along with its Play Services counterpart, so I have to keep an eye on them.

How do you turn Google Play back into Android Market?

How do you turn Google Play back into Android Market?

try "uninstall updates" in app manager (depending how old the phone is) i think.
I remember on an old phone i was really short of memory so i used the old market and it kept updating itself to playstore but there was a system app i "froze" to prevent it. cant remember the name but it was something like "market updater" or maybe com.vending update provider" or something like that.

If you can get the play store back to the market it now seems to require a manual update (at least on the old ginger bread device I maintain for my wife).

So, how did you do that?
I went to The play store and clicked uninstall updates (not to free up space, but because the play store was giving her fits) and normally it would auto update to the latest version on it's own the next time I rebooted the device. But over a month later and it is still the Market. I've tried updating the Play Store services (I think that is what it is called) but it still isn't going back to the Play Store.

Uninstall updates will not be there on newer devices who's Roms have play store by default. Only older devices that originally had android market which more recently got the play store update like those running Froyo and under. If your phone came out of box with play store you cannot revert back to the old market. This includes gingerbread and higher
