Problem - no email being downloaded either to GMail app or Mail app on the phone.

I have been using the standard Mail app successfully for well over 12 months. This week it has stopped downloading mail although mail can still be sent. This initially affected the account with my ISP (Virgin Media) and then gmail.

It happened after problems with configuration of the Virgin account in Outlook on my laptop which were successfully resolved. The account now works perfectly on the laptop.

The VM account is configured consistently in Outlook and on the phone and uses (as it always has) POP3, sync is enabled on the phone, I have restarted the phone several times, toggled sync on and off etc. Nothing has worked.

The settings HTC sent today for the Mail account use an IMAP server but the phone previously worked fine with POP settings (and indeed there is no facility to use IMAP in the Virgin account).

Any suggestions gratefully received since this is driving me nuts at the moment and is massively inconvenient (and wasting a good deal of my time) and I am extremely keen to avoid a factory reset.

I've got a Virgin account (actually Blueyonder, cos it's old!) running on my phone and it's still fine. Here are the settings I'm using:

INCOMING SETTINGS
Protocol: POP
Email address: my.name@blueyonder.co.uk
Username: recent:my.name@blueyonder.co.uk
Password: *************
POP server: pop3.blueyonder.co.uk
Security type: SSL
Server port: 995

OUTGOING SERVER SETTINGS
User name: recent:my.name@blueyonder.co.uk
Password: ************
SMTP server: smtp.blueyonder.co.uk
Security type: SSL
Server port: 465

I realise it would be better if someone using the Virgin servers could give their details, but I hope this might help - I'd imagine that the only changes would be to use the Virgin POP and SMTP servers, whose names should be easily verified. Using the keyword "recent" is something that was detailed in the Blueyonder/Virgin setup instructions, and it means that my phone picks up a copy of any emails sent from my computer, which I find useful.

Thanks. Those are exactly the settings that I am using and recent mode has been enabled since I first started using the phone. My mind is turning increasingly to other possible problems including with sync on the phone which is affecting all accounts (blueyonder and gmail).

Thanks. Now all sorted out after extensive web chat with a technician. Wasn't a problem with the mail app itself but a settings issue.
