Mail in rebate question

I was off contract and decided to renew our contract and get new phones. The new phones come with a $50 mail in rebate. I really don't want the new phones and would like to sell them as new. I looks like the only way to get the mail in rebate is to have the phones activated on my account. Am I understanding this correctly or is there a way I can get the rebates with activating the phones?

It's an automatic charge that is put on the bill at the time of order or purchase. You used an upgrade to get the devices. If you want to avoid the upgrade fee I would return the devices before you activate them and since there not activated you shouldn't have a restocking fee as long as there still in the original packaging.
