MailDroid vs. K-9 vs. Others?

My .02 ... I can't even consider another client unless it features a unified inbox. K-9 works for me, pulling in mail from 4 accounts and displaying them in one window.

I like the stock HTC client on my Desire but it needs a window or widget that displays all new mail from all accounts.

Good morning, droids... I recently purchased an 'unlocked' streak and believe it or not AT&T sent me the unlock codes yesterday,(I know I was shocked as well) so now I am no longer using the Rebel Sim II. (Although it did seem to work pretty well). However just prior to unlocking I began to see an 'K9 Alert'..syncing and sending suspended... unfortunately I have no idea what that means and I am currently unable to access the wi-fi on my device. Any ideas?
Thanks!

I have been using K-9 for a few months now. Works pretty well, but for some reason i can't figure out how to save emails locally on the phone. Just when i think they are saved locally a week goes by and i put phone into "airplane mode" and attempt to access an email that i thought was there and i get a communication error. ARG!!!

Does anyone know if saving emails to the phone is actually supported on K-9 or Maildroid? Perhaps i haven't configured something correctly on K-9 but itt appears like K-9 caches emails and clears the from the cache if not used - but i can't figure out the pattern.

I am using Maildroid and only have two complaints.

1. Needs to have a "Select All" function for deleting emails.
2. When forwarding emails, needs to have a "Contact" button to allow for selecting any number of recipients.

1. A select all exists in the latest version which was released around two weeks ago.

2. You can do that as well, although not with a 'contact' button

K-9 is easily the best email app out there.

Unless you actually want to receive email.
I tried forwarding through Gmail, K9, even powering down - which did force emails through.
K9 never got emails or would take time...in the range of an hour or more.
Maildroid receives the email as I clicked send on the desktop (I forwarded some mail from a hotmail to a pop3 account).

Very few apps get me like this...swype is another one, but maildroid is tops for email as far as I am concerned.
;)

Regardless of the email app, the app can't turn a non-push account into push.

If you have a POP account then you have to poll it.

My wife uses K9 for Yahoo and has no problems with it.

K-9 is easily the best email app out there.
Best is always highly subjective, regardless of the topic. If you're going to attempt a blanket statement then at least qualify why you think something is the best option. Statements like this are pointless and don't add anything to the discussion. All we know is that you prefer K9 but we have no idea what options you've considered, what email account types you use, or what led you to preferring K9 over everything else.

The email account I use most is an Exchange account and I preferred Touchdown over K9. YMMV, obviously.

As the MailDroid dev, let me shed some light on your questions:

1. MailDroid is free, I have no paid version
2. IMAP is push and has no control
3. POP3 is pull and can be controlled with a polling interval (go into your pop3 inbox, click preferences, and you will see an option)

If you have any more questions, just shoot me an email.

MailDroid is the only email app that worked for me. I had problems doing replies or composing in K-9. But I miss the ability to delete my Hotmail
from my Droid. Now I have to do the opposite. But its great.

I've used both K-9 and MailDroid with Fastmail's email service. What I found is that there just is no substitute for MailDroid. I bought the pro version. It was pricey, but so worth it for those who prefer push email.

Is the delete mail from server function global or can it be selected for individual messages? Some times I have a message that I like to leave on the server to be checked at home and some times not.. Just curious.

Thanks.

Its not really THAT important. Its just that the default mail client seems to alert me every 15 minutes that I have a new email. IF I delete it from my phone because I know that it is not important it just re-downloads it from the server at a later time. This is my work email and it is important that some things stay on the server. It is ok that everything stays, I just dont want to be alerted every 15 minutes of a new email when it is an email that I have already viewed and removed from my phone.. :D
I need to just try maildroid for myself I think. It looks to have very good functionality and one very important feature to me.. Spell Check!

Thanks for the quick response.

One more question. Does maildroid have the ability to archive the message like the stock gmail application did? I dont see it anywhere.

Isn't archiving really just saving the email to a folder? Create a folder named archive and just move mail there when needed. I have quite a few folders setup. Work, hobbies, things I order, personal stuff. It's all essentially archived for future viewing.

If you use gmail at all, the archive will delete the message locally but archive it on the gmail server. That way your phone doesnt fill with messages etc and you can go back to the server to view them.

I do have one other question. I have been sending an email to my phone that has a .jpg attachment. I cannot get maildroid to display the image at all. I also try to save the attachment, but it does not show up as a picture in gallery.

When I email the message to gmail and open it using the gmail app the jpg displays perfectly but obviously there is no way in the gmail app to save as an attachment.

I have tried a number of things in maildroid to display this attachment including show images load full content. Nothing that I do will allow me to display this image. The application eventually crashed and now I cannot even seem to save the attachment which doesnt matter because even when it allowed me to save, it would not display as an image. I am completely at a loss here. Any suggestions?

I don't believe maildroid syncs all those saved folders unless you want it to. So I don't believe it clogs up the phone. But even so, you can have it store to your microSD card so it's not clogging up the phone's embedded memory.

gmail is also integrated into the system and is probably setup to save it to a gallery location. I download jpg's and files but they end up in a download folder. I can find them in the gallery, but it's in a download folder. I haven't tried it, but I think you can designate a different folder. It'd be nice if it was more pc like and would ask me where I'd like to download it to. I hate having different download folders for different apps and my card becoming a mess of different folders. Not a lot of rhyme or reason.

Also, drop the developer an email. he's pretty responsive. I've bugged him numerous times early on.

I understand that you can save the mail to your sdcard. My concern is more that some times I want to delete messages completely from the server and phone, some times I just dont want the message on my phone but to remain on the server. As far as I can tell, there is no way to accomplish this as the option to delete from server is blanket meaning either you delete all messages from the server upon delete or you leave all messages on the server. The archive button deletes the message from the phone but leaves it on the server in a folder that is not synced with your phone so that you can later view the message on the server if desired. Not a big deal, just seem like it would be a nice feature. May not be practical to ask of this type of mail client however?

Ive been playing with gmail and it seems that it saves photo attachments to the download folder?? It doesnt seem to save .mp3 attachments which is a bummer. I guess that you cant have everything.

Im going to try to get to the bottom of this .jpg/maildroid issue. Hopefully its something that "I" am doing and not the software. I like maildroid but that problem would more than likely warrant a switch in email clients for me. I notice that there was a recent update for maildroid. I may try to install the update and see if that helps.

I understand. don't' think you're following. If I move it to a saved folder on the server, it's still on the server. It only is on my phone if I click on the saved folder and have it download the contents.

And practical no. Gmail is a google product. It's going to be as cohesive as possible. And it's for gmail only. 3rd party products don't know what emaily you're using and can't beging to tailor it like gmail for each different one. There are workarounds that work just fine to accomplish the task, but to ask for that kind of functionality in a 3rd party product isn't practical.

I haven't had many download issues outside of the occasional time it says it can only save things if you're using a certain file manager (like Linda or whatever), which is odd.

And I'd install every update that guy has. He's constantly working on it. I'd like to buy the app, but close to $20 is too steep for me when k9 seems to do 90% of what I want it to do and can donate $5 to the cause. $10 or so is my limit for an app.

You may be right. I may not be following. This can all be done right from the mail client? I am looking for a solution that can be done all from the mail client itself.

I am not looking for functionality that integrates with gmail specifically. Just something that would allow you to delete messages from the server on a "per email" basis rather than blanket. I have several email accounts so this is not limited to google. I just used that as an example. I have four accounts on three different types of servers. One is private. The ability to delete these emails from the server on a per email basis would be very convenient but again, maybe not practical. Maybe I should have just explained what I wanted rather than using gmail as an example since really they are not the same things. Gmail just accomplishes what I am looking for using its archive functionality.

I cant tell if the issue is with d/l the message or just the ability to display it. I have not had any issues with d/l of message attachments up to this point. I'll play with it more and see if I can figure out exactly what is going on and then post it here and email to the developer. I just want to be certain that I am not screwing something up on my end and then wasting his time.

I agree about the price of the software. I commend the developer for contributing a free application. I really like this software and the thinking behind this app. I like the fact that his spell checker is built in to the mail app. $20 is a bit too steep in my eyes as well and for the same reasons. If I continue to use maildroid and it does everything that I want I would not be at all opposed to making a $5 donation. If the app was $10 for the paid version and these issues are easily resolved I would be glad to pay the $10. $20 seems a bit steep to me but that is just my personal opinion.

Ive seen the way that the developer interacts with the users and he seems very supportive!

Thanks again!

Real quick. There is a setting in account settings called "delete sync". It gives you the options of deleting on the phone but not on the server. It'd be nice if it gave you the option to choose each time or within the batch delete options, but that might help too. Not under global settings but in account settings.

My gmail point was gmail is google's mail. Their gmail app on their OS is going to be as seamless as possible so of course it will be more functional than the general email app or a 3rd party one. That's all. Heck, I don't even know why stock mail doesn't do imap idle push when there are two strong 3rd party apps that do it along with the other OS's. That just seems basic to me.
