Help Major Sprint HTC Hero Phone Issues

Umm, I really hope you're exaggerating?

Unfortunately, I'm not. The weird thing is, it's sporadic. Due to Murphy's Law, however, I always seem to get the crappiest battery life when I don't have a charger around. For instance, I have it sitting on my desk at work (unplugged) and I can go all 8+ hours with about 30-40% battery remaining. Thursday night, I had a baseball game. It was fully charged upon arrival at 5:30 (it was on the charger on the ride up and was at 100% capacity). By the 5th inning (around 8:30-9pm) it was completely dead.

I've tried a few different radios but didn't really see much difference. Maybe I'll give the Verizon radio another go as people seem to have decent results with that.

Just get a extra battery and carry it with you thats what I do. I got the generic batteries on ebay not sure if thats good but they work fine

I have a love, hate relationship with my hero. It's great on vacations with the gps and all that jazz but in my daily activities it sucks, just typing this is driving me crazy. I have to restart daily just so it'll act right. The mobile network disconnects all day. Idk what to do but wait till I can afford a better phone, sigh...

The worst part about it is, what can you do? I had designs to call Sprint and try to explain all of the troubles that the phone has been giving me, but the only solution is going to be them sending me a new/refurbished Hero. This is my 2nd Hero. It's just going to be an exercise in futility. The sad thing is, there is really no good alternative. From what I've read, the Moment is riddled with its own (often described worse) issues. The EVO appears to have its own problems, namely with battery life (which is one of the issues I'm having), not to mention, I don't have the cash to pony up for an EVO, even if they were to offer the upgrade early, and I sure as hell am not going back to WinMo. The only other alternatives are Blackberry or a standard regular dumbphone, which at this point, I am actually considering.

I had a blackberry before and it was a good phone. My friend who is in IT has a iphone and laughs at me when I bitch about my phone. The bottom line is we arent there yet with these phones some work better then others

What sucks the most is now I dont know about android on any phone. I feel burned and I am sure it will prob be a good product some day just not today on my hero

Well, I'm sure I'm going to get absolutely HAMMERED for saying this, but the way I feel right now is, if you want a phone that works as it should (and granted, EVERY phone has issues, I understand that, especially in light of what's been going on w/ the newest version) you have to have an iPhone. The problem is, there is no way in hell I'm going to AT&T. That's completely counterproductive. Not only are you paying more for the service, but the service sucks.

The result would be the same as it is for me now. Right now, Sprint network/coverage for where I am is outstanding but the phone blows. With an iPhone, the hardware is great but with the network it's fairly useless. Bottom line is, I won't be leaving Sprint so unless they get an iPhone, it's a moot point.

As far as Android goes, the OS is great and I love, love, love it. It's just the damn phone that has me sour. I do have a bunch of friends w/ the original "Droid" on Verizon and they have no issues. Personally, I don't like Motorola products. I'm not sold on their design or form factor, however, from what I've seen, the hardware and software play a lot nicer together than my Hero does.

It's pretty darn frustrating.

One bad phone issue should not mean they are all bad. Look at the Droid, Evo, Incredible, etc etc. All android phones getting nothing but rave reviews and most can be called "potential iPhone killers", but is that to say they don't have problems too? Of course they do, venture to any of there forums here and you can find a similar issue with each. Issues in which the OP is stating could simply range from a minor tweek in the service in his area causing issues. The hero is by NO means the best android phone on the market, but its pretty damn good. I was showing up my friends with iPhones because my phone could do exactly what they can. Point being, just because of one bad experience with a phone doesn't mean its absolute garbage. And to say things like "I just can't trust Android" because of one phone issue is absurd and simply jumping way too far into a conclusion.

I just feel burned and if I was going to get another android phone I would be worried. I shouldnt have to deal with the mess of phone I have right now.

I don't trust HTC Android phones. They seem to share a lot of the same issues.

I have new, refurbished mot razr v3s (unlocked) for sale, ohhhh yeah.

I empathize with you guys, which is why I suggest you upgrade to Fresh v2.3.3 and you'll probably find your problems subside into thin air. I don't have a great many issues discussed here and love this phone (for the most part)! The Hero root with Fresh Kitchen is really a no brain affair. Install HTC Sync, plug in phone. load kitchen, click root --> done. Next copy fresh v2.3.3 to SD card, reboot and hold home key, from recovery, wipe davlik, wipe data, and flash fresh that you previously put on SD - DONE. Actually legwork is minutes and results are HUGELY different from stock 2.1 RUU, IMHO.

I'm running 2.3.3 :)

That's the problem. I'm running what should be smooth as can be, and it's running like garbage.

I am actually about to make a Nandroid backup and completely strip out every app i rarely use and run it like that for a day or two to see if it helps. Even if that is the case, I'm seriously minimizing the potential that the phone has just to get it to function. Pretty sad.

Try a vanilla rom, like darch, or the froyo port.. I think sense doesn't play nice with everyone's phones... I know that it is awesome, but if your rooted, and you are able, make a nandroid backup, and try one out. It can't hurt, right?

Alright sir, I will give your advice a go! I actually have been messing w/ Darch2.7 a bit this morning. Now I am attempting to import my TitaniumBackup settings and getting it all set up like I like it. I'll give it a go for a day or two to see how nice it plays w/ my phone.

While it isn't ideal (because, after all, SenseUI was SUPPOSED to work with this phone), if I can get the Vanilla OS to work (and work well) I'll be happy, because at this point, the phone has become virtually unusable in the state it's in.

I only had a few minutes to browse through the Darch thread over on XDA, but I noticed that VVM isn't included and something with the camera needs to be tweaked. Can this be done using the Fresh Kitchen? The only reason I ask is because I have NO CLUE how to do that ADB Shell stuff.

TIA.

just curious... did you do a data wipe and davlik wipe, and if ur having battery longevity problems, did you run until drained, wipe battery stats, and charge to full?

i know it's all obvious and you probably did it, but I wish NO SENSE UI on no man :D

OK, so I'm running Darch2.7 and I've pretty much got it set up, however, the calendar keeps FCing on me. I Titanium restored from Fresh 2.3.3 so I don't know if that has anything to do with it.

Any ideas? This is kind of a deal breaker.

Not every product from each brand will be perfect, you should know this. Was somewhat the entire point of my post. Not all android phones are equal, hell not all hero's are equal either. I'm sorry if you feel like one bad experience will make you quit buying a phone brand, or even OS on a phone. Especially when HTC is looked at as a great phone brand. You can make your own decisions, its no sweat off my back if you leave android phones or HTC, I'm simply trying to put things into perspective. Think of it this way, we've all had a bad McDonalds burger, didn't stop anyone from going back did it?

I think (only speculation, by trial and error testing on my part...) that when you restore a ti backup from a sense rom to a vanilla (or similar launcher app) that they don't always play nice, because they are so different. The widgets aren't always the same, and sometimes I have had a few issues getting everything to work correctly... Usually patience is a virtue in this situation, for me because I can work out the problem by messing with settings, or reloading my widgets/apps on the screens manually. I don't use the calendar, so I can't help you there other than to suggest trying a different app, or uninstalling and reinstalling the one you are using....

Good luck, I hope you can get it straightened out!

I did! I reflashed and restored everything BUT the calendar and voila. The only odd thing now is, my available memory has gone down to 28MB where it was at 113 before I reflashed. I may have to give it another go as I forgot to check the apps2sd box BEFORE restoring :(
