The only way to be grandfathered in, is if you already have the $30 smart phone data plan. If you have the $15 Unlimted MediaNet for regular phones, you can't keep that. Sorry.

Baldilocks is correct. It is very clear cut. I think the confusion started because in the original post the OP never stated that he had an unlimited "smartphone" data plan, he only said that he had an "unlimited data plan". Eventually it was stated that he only had the unlimited "medianet" data plan.

I had unlimited data because of a 3GS. I went in and bought a captivate and they were like, "yeah you have unlimited datas, you want to keep it?" and I was all like, "yeh." and they were all like, "ok."

i had the non smart phone unlimited data plan before the captivate, and was able to get the smart phone unlimited data plan about a week after my purchase. it took a lot of calling and negotiating before i got what i wanted. check out my thread about it:

There is NO way around it. Not with a Captivate. As soon as you put your SIM in it, you will get a text telling you that you have been moved to a compatible data plan. (200MB by default.)

99.999999999999999999% of the time you are going to be out of luck. I am still calling B.S. on it.
Trust me, I have been trying since the iPhone 4 came out to get Unlimited Data on my girlfriends line and it still hasn't happened.

AT&T decided that it won't allow its users to have any unlimited data plans for smartphones after like june of this year. My unlimited plan is grandfathered in, and I would like to keep it that way. but if i go to the at&t store and buy a captivate like I want, they are going to make me change my contract from the unlimited I have now to either 200mb or 2gb per month when they activate the phone. Would anyone know a way to buy a captivate and get it working with my current service without getting screwed out of my unlimited data by at&t? Is it really as simple as buying one from another source and transferring my sim card to the captivate? thanks

i switched to captivate kept my unlimited data plan no 2gb cap they let you keep it because you are renewing contract not signing a new one

man, as a rep i love coming into these places and seeing the totally off-the-wall synopsis everyone has about at&t policies and procedures

alls you gotta know is:

1) store reps are commissioned
2) higher the feature, higher the payout
3) if they say you have to change to a CHEAPER feature, there's a damn good reason for that.
