Maps app constantly running?

Recently, I've noticed my Maps application running in the background even though I havent used the maps application ever.

Is there any way to get this to shut off/go away without rooting or deleting programs?

A number of apps and processes run in the background. Maps is triggered by a global setting (prompted twice I believe) that says something along the lines of "allow Google servers to access and use my location"

Once when the phone is set up...again when opening the browser (make searches faster/pertinent to your area)

You can turn off these features by
1. Disable GPS
2. Open the web browser
Press menu.more.settings.uncheck enable location

Maps is set to cache while on wifi only by default so you shouldn't have to do anything there

Keep in mind other spps may still call on maps for data..
