Every day I get a notification for market updates for facebook, skype, amazon mp3. I don't use any of those apps so I don't want updates for them. Is there any way to stop the market from notifying me of those updates?

No way to stop the notification unless you are rooted and remove the app or remove the market link.

Reasonable enough solution for people running up to date phones with plenty of space on them. I can't accept all the updates for junk I don't want because it means I can't fit on the apps I do want. I've thought about rooting but had various reasons not to really fancy the idea. Is there even a way to tell it you don't ever want to be notified of updates to any apps? Ideally I'd like to specify no updates to stock apps I don't want, but since I can't do that I'd go for no update notifications at all in preference to having this icon come up every day making the place look untidy. Annoying.

If you use app brain for your market and change the settings in the stock market not to notify you about updates.
App brain has a setting to never notify you for certain apps.
