When will Marshmallow be rootable? I've been dealing with apparently unrootable ZTE phones for maybe 2 years now, and it's driving me up the wall. I know they switched stuff for security, but it should be possible to go back to an older version of Android which is more user friendly.

Welcome to AF :).

Unfortunately, there's no way to know when a particular root method for a given version of Android and/or device and/or for a given carrier will be available, if ever. The root methods and exploits (if/when they exist) are often dependent on that triangle (Android version, specific hardware device, and sometimes carrier).

Google and the Linux developers are continually updating Android and Linux (for the kernel) to make it not just more functional and stable, but more secure as you already said.

It's also usually very difficult to revert to prior versions of Android--not impossible mind you--and that's clearly a focus that Google doesn't put much effort into, for obvious reasons.

My own personal advice: Nexus devices--unlockable bootloaders and a (relatively) straight-forward path to root--although even that is getting tougher with Android 7.x / Nougat.

Cheers!
