mass storage device

Is it possible to hook the DX up to an external mass storage device? Or is the whole USB thing one way?

I wil answer you question with a question. Can you hook two flash drives together or two hard drives?

No you can't.
The Droid X does have the ability to communicate through a dedicated IO port to a micro SD CARD. So, considering this phone is more like a PC than a relatively mindless hard drive, I'm not sure what your point was. It clearly has some ability to access external memory.

Since you kind of missed the point, I'll be clearer. Can the USB port be used to access an external drive? Can the IO port be hijacked in the OS, or is there actual hardware missing to allow such type of communications?

Any meaningful answers greatly appreciated.

The USB drivers in the X do not have a host mode. Thus, it can not be used as a host to hardware like mass storage, keyboards, etc.

I don't believe there's a hardware difference on the USB ports. The hardware standard specifies a pinout and how data must flow, not which mode the port operates in. Of course, USB demands a power draw for virtually all devices, so that would be a problem since the X probably can't supply the current - could probably use a powered hub or a powered device to get around that.
