Help Mass storage mode won't work after OTA - updated with possible fix

I remember seeing this in other threads but can't find it.

After the recent OTA update, my computer (Win 7) tries to see my Fascinate's SD card as a CD ROM when I try it in mass storage mode. Unrooted. Any advice?

Yeah that was the problem many of us had when we tried out DL09 (the new update). I couldn't find out any other way to get it to work but to go back to DJ05.

If you are rooted their are ways around this...,nonroot unfortunately there isn't as it involves kernels

Man, I want to love this phone, but it keeps slapping me in the face.

Fraid to root cause I fear I will brick it, but this is getting old.

Ok, I fixed it, I hope. It is working now, and hopefully will continue

Here's what I did.

As soon as USB is plugged in, the phone is recognized as a CD ROM. Explore the files anyway. Quickly double click on the file that starts with "Samsung" which is a driver for USB for the computer. Install this.

At this point, things seemed to operate per norm, the option to mount the SD card appeared on the phone (had the mass storage option turned on in the USB settings initially).

Unplugged, then reconnected. The CD ROM came back up, then disappeared, I selected the mount option on the phone, and it works again.

Clear as mud?

After installing those drivers, here's what I've done to make this as easy as possible.

#1) USB Settings - change to Ask on Connection. It appears that since the update, both Media Player and Mass Storage selections default to Media Player.

#2) Plug into computer. The phone will give you the two buttons. Click mass storage. the CD ROM window will pop up. Just close it. Now the USB icon should appear on the phone, and go to notifications and mount as normal.

The whole process takes a little longer than before, but it's not crippling for me. However, I understand that people on different platforms (I've texted XP and Win7) aren't as fortunate, so its a much bigger problem for them.

I had this issue too and just want to go on record as saying that this is a horrible move by VW to try and get their fingers into our Android experience. USB mounting is one of the top reasons I went Android over iPhone/iTunes and VW is trying to exploit that. Awful awful awful..... inexcusable. Add to that how poorly executed this new "feature" is - to sneak it into an update when they should be focusing on getting Froyo to us. Awful!

It is interesting that the issue is not on all Fascinates. Mine works just the same as it did prior to the update, as well as many others we see posting about it.

This is what exasperates me about these devices; I saw it in Eris, with many issues that sound like factory or assembly or software quality issues, but in some of the devices, not all by any means.

Now I'm seeing it again having to do with OTAs.

When I plug in my updated Fascinates, my Windows 7 computers show them as CD-ROMs for about 40 seconds, then switch to seeing them as Removable Devices. At that point, I can pull down the status bar on the phones and Mount them, as prior to the update.

In order to skip that 40 second delay, I can right-click the virtual CD-ROM on my computer, tell it to "eject", and then immediately mount the phone's card.

My guess is that Verizon did this in order to make the Samsung USB drivers available to any computer (any PC computer?) to which you attach the phone.

Whatever their reasons were it was a mistake....way too many people having issues with it

You don't need Samsung USB drivers to mount or use your phone "normally" when connecting via USB to a computer. The CD-ROM debacle was so VZW could get you to install their new Media Sync software so maybe you'd like it and spend a few bucks more a month for the service. The whole thing was completely unnecessary. My phone works just like it used to via USB and I didn't install any drivers. I just have to eject the CD-ROM or say "no" to the installer if it runs. I rarely mount my phone via USB so it's not a big deal.

I'm having this issue on my MAC. I cannot for the life of me figure out how to get it to recognize that my phone is plugged in. I plug in the usb and it just charges....this is very frustrating.
